Internet Explorer 11 behaving strangely after PC refresh

    Question

  • Hello All

Yesterday due to some issue with my PC, I had to refresh Windows 8.1 installation which basically removed all my installed application (except for store one), which is ok, it is as expected.

However once everything was up and running i.e. applications installed & all windows updates installed, Internet explorer started behaving strangely:

    • Internet explorer icon from Start menu doesn't work on clicking.
    • Internet explorer icon appears blank in taskbar and no option for pin to taskbar either
    • Internet explorer doesn't opens using search/charm bar
    • If I use search and open any link from there, internet explorer works.
    • If I use Dell dock which has separate category for Internet explorer to launch, IE opens/works

I know it's in preview and not sure if someone else faced this issue but if any assistance please? I already tried to turn off Internet explorer 11 from windows feature and turn it back on with no luck. Don't want to play much with registries to break anything at present.

    Thanks in advance !

  • Robert, I tried searching everywhere/application in particular both with same results.

Give a more explicit example.  E.g. press Ctrl-Tab and type iexplore.exe  (in full).   What do you see?  If you see one instance of  iexplore.exe press the Menu key and tell us what options you have.  FWIW I see one that says  "Run as Administrator"  Perhaps you should try that?

Otherwise, give a better example of what you are doing and seeing and explain what is your problem with what you are seeing.

  • Hi,

From your description, please check whether IE is default browser, often this problem caused by IE is not default browser. In addition, you can refer to the link below for more details to set IE as default browser for test.

  • IE has been my default browser since 4 years now. :-). Don't have any other browser loaded/installed on my system.

  • Internet explorer doesn't opens using search/charm bar

Using Search Everywhere?   Try pressing Ctrl-Tab and searching only Apps?

    Good luck

  • Hi,

It is probably caused by your windows refesh, that's to say not your IE probablem, it's system problem, may be you can try to refresh your system again for test. Except this, we can try to repair this problem by Windows ISO.

  • Thanks Robert & Roger for your responses.

Robert, I tried searching everywhere/application in particular both with same results. Only if I open/click on web links resulted by search everywhere, the Internet explorer opens fine.

Roger, I used windows ISO itself to refresh my PC. Basically it cleared up all user installed applications except for applications installed using Windows store.

As an update, I did reset for my PC i.e. re-installed complete OS to fix the issue. However might be a good thing to look into before rolling out Windows 8.1 as RTM or production.

    Thanks again
