Internet Explorer 8 does not open file:// URL

    Question

  • Hello,

    we have an intranet with a lot of documents that are linked with the file:// protocol. Lately we have found that Internet explorer does not open the files anymore when we click on the link. Firefox have never opened the links, but we have not had any problems with IE before.

  • More info:

    Win XP pro

    IE8.0.6001.18702

    When we try to click the URL, we will not even get the click-sound. Nothing happens. http:// URL's work fine, it is just the file:// URL's that will not work.

    Are you sure that the page is showing as being in the Intranet security zone?

    (BING search for
        file protocol intranet site:blogs.msdn.com
    )

    BTW previously that would have shown up in a Microsoft search for MSDN but they keep fiddling with the search UI.   ; ]

  • Thank you Robert, your answer set me on the right track. After I had put the site as a trusted site, the links worked again. Don't know if that is the correct way to deal with the problem, but it did the trick.
