Internet Explorer 10 won't install (Win 7 x64 SP1)

    Question

  • Internet Explorer 10 won't install. (Win 7 x64 Ultimate, SP1) Both methods say it has installed but when launching IE, it's IE 9.

Both methods with clean boot as detailed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0

    Method 1: Windows Update

    - Launch Windows Update, select Internet Explorer 10 and install. Windows Update says successfully installed (without restart) but on launch is only IE 9.

  • End result same - says sucessful install but on reboot still IE 9.

What all are you checking to decide that you still have "IE 9"?   E.g. if it is just Help, About that might only be a registry problem.

You may need to use ProcMon to see what is going on or to supplement to help interpret whatever diagnostics you already have.

  • For anyone that can't get IE 10 installed

Instructions for the end user would be to:

    • Copy GetLogs_local.bat to desktop
    • Run elevated
    • Send back the SetupFailureLogs folder that the script creates

http://sdrv.ms/11FIHrc  <<< download the bat file from there

Zip up the folder that ends up on your desktop and send it to susan-at-msmvps.com (change the -at- to @)

  • [image of iexplore.exe Properties shows File version  9.0.8112.16470  Size  739 KB  Date modified  02/02/2013 4:19 AM]

FWIW I think the version of running IE modules, e.g. as seen using msinfo32.exe Loaded Modules and sorted by Version, might be more compelling evidence but would agree that looks unexpected.

What does that version and timestamp correspond to?...   Looks like some version of

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809289

Powershell might clarify that, e.g. the length would be in the same format as the KB article gives.

    cdd"$env:programfiles\Internet Explorer"

    get-item  iexplore.exe  |  fl

(BTW  I don't know how to do the equivalent of adding the /d switch on the CD command if it happens to open on the wrong drive. Probably just switch drives as needed.  <w>)

FWIW I'm wondering if all the prereq's that your logs are showing are causing confusion.   Have you tried doing this update in two stages, getting up-to-date (so presumably removing any need for prereq's--especially ones which might cause a reboot, which I suspect may be the case but have not checked any details to test that hypothesis) and then doing the IE10 update?

    Good luck

Now why is that showing up as a different version?? Mystified. In any case, still IE 9.

But here's the issue Robert - in I think all but one of the methods I've tried, I don't need to reboot...for instance last attempt I did via Windows Update it just went through and said installed.

In more ways than just the last.

It looks like RTM but CreationTime is about a week ago (5 days before the install attempt).   Does that timestamp ring a bell for you?   E.g. is this a new image?

    http://www.ie8blog.com/2011/03/27/internet-explorer-9-rtm-windows-7-x86-file-version-information/

    (BING search for
        9.00.8112.16421
    )

Where was the update, e.g. IE10_Main.log, getting this 9.0.8112.16470 from?   When?   E.g. after one of the prereq's was applied?   At first I was thinking that your symptom was going to indicate a bug in the install but now I'm wondering if you have some interfering security.   Then you might have to uninstall it if it can't be disabled automatically or manually.

" FWIW I'm wondering if all the prereq's that your logs are showing are causing confusion.   Have you tried doing this update in two stages, getting up-to-date (so presumably removing any need for prereq's--especially ones which might cause a reboot, which I suspect may be the case but have not checked any details to test that hypothesis) and then doing the IE10 update?"

That was my point.   I'm wondering if a reboot may be required which is trying to be avoided because you need to apply so much stuff at once.   However, now that you aren't even showing current maintenance at the IE9 level the install procedures may only be victims not culprits.  Again, I think running ProcMon would help you correlate all the logs that are being created (e.g. filter with Operation Contains write).   Note that if you do get a forced boot and unexpected results after it that you could use ProcMon's Boot Logging option to try to figure out what was going on then.

    Good luck

  • Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for contributing. Unfortunately the KB article is not of much help at all.

  • Re: IE 9 version.

No new image being used. File properties is still showing the same version as originally posted in the screen capture!!

    Re: Security.

Security software is a valid concern - bu t I've tried installing with a clean boot, ie. with all security and AV disabled...so that should be negated shouldn't it? This has been disabled both via msconfig and services.msc

    Re: Reboots

I have tried normal install without reboot via Windows Update, with reboot as well (though not required) after Windows Update and with reboot required via the IEAK 10 deployment. Zero result either way.

Ugh. ProcMon may be a necessary evil.
