How to bring back “Browser mode” in IE11?

    Question

  • When IE11 is first installed on Windows 7, it comes with old-fashioned F12 tool which allows to change browser modes.

However, if you go to "Tools" menu and select "F12" developers tool, it gets replaced with new developer tools, and "Browser mode" is no longer available.

The only way to bring it back is to uninstall IE11 and reinstall it.

However, as a web developer, I use this tool literally hundreds of times every day. And no, it is not practically possible to keep IE7, 8, 9 and 10 virtual machines open simultaneously.

Is there easier way to switch between browser modes in IE11?

  • Hi,

As far as I know, this should be a new feature in Internet Explorer 11. For more details, you may refer to:

  • Hi,

    No...

you can query documentMode and compatMode in the console.... the Developer tool still shows x-ua switching in the Console tab, but also has improved markup error reporting.

Some of the major public sites only support the last three versions of a browser.... that leaves IE9,10 and 11 in your test suite...

Sites that require compatibility view are on the MS lists.... the Compatibility view settings have not changed..(much)... the "Display all sites in compatibility view" has been removed.....

If you are coding to standards and use feature testing instead of UAS sniffing the is little need to test for IE7 or Quirks browsers (IE5 and Netscape).... at a pinch you can add the x-ua to your pages or server headers to emulate those browser versions in IE11 for testing purposes.

Post feature requests for IE to http://connect.Microsoft.com/ie

    Regards.
