Internet Explorer 9 opens, then immediately closes

    Question

  • After upgrading my Windows 7 x64 SP1 to IE 9, it started closing immediately after it was opened. It occurs on both the safe-mode and regular versions. The only version that will launch is x64.

    So far, I have done the following:

    • Reinstalled
    • Install both with Windows Update & Downloaded version
    • Downloading from different location than the default
    • Reset internet settings to defaults
    • Ran sfc /scannow with no reported errors
    • Toggled "Use software rendering"
    • Tried running in Windows Safe-Mode
    • Run as admin
    • Tried running under different user
    • Installed ALL Windows Updates

    The 1st result I got when I googled the issue was one from Microsoft, and it stated to:

    Run Internet Explorer troubleshooters

    1. Close all programs.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Click Find and Fix Problems under System and Security.
    4. Click View All on the task pane on the left.
    5. Click Internet Explorer Performance.
    6. Click Next in the dialogue box.
    7. The troubleshooter will run and fix all identified issues automatically. Click Close.
    However, there isn't anything listed there for IE fixes. I even checked other machines on my domain and they too do not have anything listed for IE. I checked the group policy and local policy to see if checking online for troubleshooting was disabled.

  • I have the same problem this is what I tried to no avail.

    1.       Installed Win 7 Pro 64x with all of the updates. At this point IE8 is working with no problems.

    2.       Installed IE9 and IE9 would close as soon as it opened.

    3.       Rolled the system back to IE8 and it worked fine again.

    4.       Formatted the Hard Drive and Installed Win7 Pro 64x again and installed all of the updates.

    5.       Repeated steps 2 & 3 to no avail.

    This does not happen all the time but it seems to happen quite often. Has anyone found a solution to the problem?

  • After many hours I have figured out that the problem is in the registry specificly in "HKLM\SOFTWARE" but exactly which key or keys are causing the problem I'm not sure yet.

    Windows 7 doesnt like it when you try to replace some of the keys like "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft" even when you edit the hive offline it still does not import all of the keys. I have started using RegMagk and it seems to do a better job of importing but there are still problems.

    Anyone else run into this?

    Please let me know

  • Hi,

    The process of clearing these issues is very simple. Run IE 9 without any plug-in, add-ons or other extension.

    That is, if the software is yet to be installed. If it has already been installed then disable the add-ons.

    It is important to check what are the add ons that cause the crashing if that is the case; this can be done by clicking on ‘Start’, then on ‘All programs’, then on ‘Accessories’, then on ‘System tools’.

    Click on Internet explorer again and again click on the ‘Tools’ option.

    Follow this by clicking on ‘Manage add-ons’.

    There will be an option under show: all add ons.

    Open the option and click on any add on and press the ‘CTRL + A’ on the keyboard.

    That should help select all the add ons; once that is done simply disable all the add ons and click ‘Close’.

    Finally close Internet Explorer and open it again.

    At this stage if it continues to open and work correctly then the add-on enabled manually will work properly and will stay! The constant problems of the browser crashing can be avoided.

  • I seem to have this issue consistently after moving my default Program Files / User Data folders to a different drive (something I do due to an SSD system drive).

    The solution in this case as is follows:

    1. Make sure Internet Explorer was installed to the appropriate drive (in my case and for the purposes of this guide, Drive D)
    2. DELETE the old Internet Explorer folders (in your system drive, usually drive C).
      You may encounter some resistance from the system. There are ways to get around it, but the fastest way is to do it in safe mode. 
    3. Open CMD in Administrator (In the start menu search bar, type CMD and instead of ENTER hit CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER).
    4. Navigate to C:\Program Files
    5. Make sure the folder "Internet Explorer" has been removed
    6. Create a folder junction using the command:*
      mklink /j "Internet Explorer" "D:\Program Files\Internet Explorer"
      * Change according to your system settings and folder names
      **  (repeat for "Program Files (x86)" if on a 64Bit system
    7. IE should now launch fine.

  • @Ambious You are a star! I've just set up my first PC with an SSD and moved program files etc to the E: drive (C: SSD, D: BD-RE, E: Main HDD) and since IE9 installed itself (along with SP1) over night I've not been able to get IE to open for more than half a second, and every time I try to open a folder in explorer it insists on opening in a new window. It's been driving me crazy all morning! I never even thought about a junction! D'oh! Thank you SO much. If I could vote you up more than once, I would :D

    do not manually edit the registry UNLESS you are extreemly confident that you know what you are doing... (sorry it appears that you do not)

    RegMajic was a tool written for XP machines, the registry schema in Windows 7 is NOT the same...it will probably do more harm than good on Windows7. Check with their website if their product is suitable for use with Windows 7.

    You have probably invalidated your EULA. (end user license agreement)

    I would suggest that you seek paid support from your local reputable computer repair shop.

  • Found that I had a problem with a user profile earlier, deleted the profile and logged back in to re-create the profile.  No matter who was logged on the IE 9, on  Windows 7 Pro 32 bit, would flash open and then close for all users logged in.  I had about given up when I decided to delete the user Liberty I had removed the profile and deleted all files with it (using the Windows User removal option) and then created the user brand new.  After logging onto Windows with the newly recreated user the problem was fixed for all users.

  • For future reference: I had the same issue and in my case, it was also related to the user profile.

    I had renamed the user with which I was logged on. I wasn't able to open IE9 at all (not with add-on disabled, not the 64-bit version, ...)

    After logging off and back on again, IE started again as usual.
