Password Forgotten!

I'm hoping someone more techy than me can help with our problem, so here goes:
Someone (could have been one of four kids or the husband) has changed the password on one of our two computers, which is running Win XP Prof. So I try to get into Safe mode to access admin but computer goes down when I am punching (not really, but want to...) F8 key. Also, I know that I did set up the admin and I'm fairly certain non-techy hubby never did either. Are we doomed to buy forgotten password wizard disk or is there another way - like a universal password - that we can get in the front door? Of course, now I've learned about creating a password disk......too late but have already done on second home computer.....!
Any hope?
