Answered DPM Storage Pool disk utilization

    Hi Everyone,

I currently have a client who is running DPM 2010 on Server 2008 R2 SP1, they have a storage pool configured with 5 disks

    Disk Total Capacity % Unallocated

    Disk 1  8TB 7%

    Disk 2 2TB 12%

    Disk 3 2TB 51%

    Disk 4 2TB 3%

    Disk 5 3TB 6%

Disk 4 is causing backups to fail as there isn't enough space for new backups. I need a way to move some of the backups from Disk 4 to Disk 3, I've had a look at the powershell script MigrateDatasourceDataFromDPM however I don't have enough space to relocate an entire disk of replicas to another disk, I only want to move a small portion of data sources on one disk to another.

They currently have just one Protection Group that has 106 members so I can't migrate the data based on the Protection Group

I've had a look at a few powershells commands and the one that seems most relevant in Get-Datasource what I'm hoping to do is filter that to only list the datasources on Disk 4 and then from that, filter it again so that I can move a few of the items from Disk 4 to Disk 3

If someone can please point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it as the client is starting to miss backups.

As a side note I found a script to shrink the dynamic disks using DiskPart which I've run and recovered some space on several datastores however that isn't a long term fix, the short term protection is set for 5 days then it is written to tape so I can't shorten the retention period either.

    HI,

You should be able to allocate more space to a replica or recovery point volume and DPM should use any free space in the storage pool.  What error do you get when you try to add more disk space to the problematic data source ?
