Answered Cannot delete Exchange database, there is a SystemMailbox

    Hi,

    I'm trying to remove an Exchange Database that has a SystemMailbox{XXXXXXXX} on it.  How do I go about deleting this DB, do I have to move the SystemMailbox or delete it?

    There are no arbitraion mailboxes or any other mailboxes on this DB.

    Post the error message.
    Is the default database you are trying to remove which got created at the time of exchange installation?

    Hi,

    I assume that you want to remove your last exchange mailbox server.

    you can use ADSIedit to delete ot to move  arbitration mailbox, check mailbox part on these  step by step :

    Those two articles deal specifically with artbitration mailboxes, as per my original post I do not have arbitraion mailboxes on this DB only one SystemMailbox

    No this is not the default database that was creating during installtion.

    No I'm not removing my last exchange mailbox server, I need to remove one DB on one of many Exchange 2010 servers I have.

    There are no Mailbx plans, no arbitraion mailbxes etc, I've also already run Set-AdServerSettings -ViewEntireForest $True then Get-Mailbox -database xxx -arbitraion and it does not show any mailboxes

    The reason I can't delete the DB is that there is a SystemMailbox{xxxx} on the DB, what do I do with this SystemMailbox?

    Well if I don't need this database than I wouldn't worry about the System Mailbox.
    There is another way to delete the database, from adsiedit.msc
    Configuration...Services...MicrosoftExchange...YourORG...Administrative Group...ExchangeAdministrativeGroup...Databases...<Delete the database you want to delete>

    Using ADSI edit to delete a DB from Exchange 2010 seems to be the solution every one suggests however I feel this shouldn't be the solution, everyone should be able to delete a DB via the EMA or Powershell.  Going down the ADSI edit route seems to be a bit brutal just to delete a DB but that's just me.
