Exchange 2010 RTM to SP2 direct upgrade
-
domenica 6 maggio 2012 05:37
Hello,
running exchange 2010 RTM RU2, windows 2008R2 enterprise. All servers in its own dedicated roles, hub, cas, mailbox1 and mailbx2. no CAS, or DAG . I am planning on upgrading to windows 2008R2 sp1 first than apply the exchange 2010 sp2 upgrade. exchange 2010 was transitioned from exchange 2003. all exchange 2003 servers has been decommissioned.
Wondering if anyone has encountered any issues while doing this upgrade. Any input, feedbacks, best practices for a successful upgrade would be much appreciated!

You may have already seen these links but here goes:
Overview

Note that you cannot revert to RTM. Removing the SP is equivalent to... uninstalling Exchange.
Since you had E2K3 before, you might encounter this message:
Something to consider if you use redirection for OWA:

Hello,
To upgrade to Exchange Server 2010 SP2, I would recommend proceeding like that:
- Upgrade your CAS servers
- then upgrade your HUB servers
- then upgrade your MBX servers
If you are using CAS array with load balanced CAS servers then note that the coexistance of Exchange Server 2010 RTM and Exchange Server 2010 SP2 CAS sevrers is not supported by Microsoft.
For that, it is recommended to proceed like that:
- For each server to upgrade, remove it temporary from your load balancing pool
- Upgrade the server
- Proceed like that until your upgrade most of CAS servers
- Switch your load balancing pool to use the upgraded CAS servers
- Upgrade remaining CAS servers and join them to your load balancing pool
If you are using DAG then proceed like that for each member to upgrade:
- Move all active databases to other DAG members
- Stop Microsoft Exchange Replication Service on this member: If it is the PAM then a re-election will be made
Upgrade your member and then make sure that Exchange Replication Service is running correctly on it. You can do that for each DAG member.
Note that you can not use StartDagServerMaintenance.ps1 and StopDagServerMaintenance.ps1 scripts since you will not find them for RTM installations of Exchange Server 2010. They had been added since SP1.
Note that it will be better to install SP2 with RU2 instead of SP2 only.

Hi,
I think it's a good idea to start with installation of W2K8 R2 SP1 installation. Not only because it's important to also keep the OS updated, but also that it will save you time since none of the mentioned hotfixes in Exchange 2010 Prerequisites needs to be installed before you start upgrading the Exchange Servers.I have never installed SP2 on RTM Servers, but I can't think any problem with that.

Hi Martina, I did it recently and I confirm that, once all prerequisites are installed, there is no issue with that.

Thank you for your suggestions and feedback. I am really surprised that there aren't more issues upgrading from RTM to E14 sp2. This is a good thing.
So to reiterate, to upgrade from exchange 2010 RTM, to SP2, with no CAS array, or DAGs, the following steps are necessary:
1. upgrade windows 2008R2 to sp1 on all exchange 2010 servers - let it seat for a few days
2. upgrade AD schema - setup /prepareschema let it seat for a few days
3. Install IIS 6 WMI - import-module servermanager - add-windowsfeature web-wmi
4. upgrade the following servers to Exchange 2010 sp2 in order : CAS, HUB, Mailbox following the below instructions from Microsoft.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629560.aspx
Please let me know if I am missing any steps and that you would like to share your experience upgrading RTM to Exchange 2010 sp2
Thanks!

All looks good, you dont have to wait a few days after the OS update, you may be being cautious, but no reason why you can't just carry on.
Make sure the prepare schema is dont in the same AD site as the schema master.

To prepare the AD schema, you have be in the same AD site as the schema master. To determine the schema master, run netdom query fsmo command. Better if you extend the schema on the schema Master directly.

lunedì 28 maggio 2012 18:13Has anyone doing such an upgrade encountered a requirement to backup AD before running 'setup /prepareschema' for rollback purposes? I understand the schema upgrade simply adds new attributes for the Exchange 2010 SP2. I am arguing the requirement to take such a step prior to the schema upgrade.

As a step it doesn't hurt, but in reality you dont need to, as it will just extend the schema.Sukh

Agreed on both counts.
Guess I just don't want to go to the trouble of preparing for the very low probability of a Forest recovery.
I will do my best to convince the decision maker and see where the chips fall.
Thanks for the comment.

It has been 3 weeks since I have upgraded from RTM ur2 to exchange 2010 sp2 ur2. I followed the instructions here very carefully and followed all the links.
I have a very basic setup, each server roles are dedicated and are VMs. no dag, no cas array.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629560.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh529928.aspx
I paid especially attention to the "execution policy of Windows PowerShell scripts" as referenced in the release note.
install on cas, hub, mailbox1, and mailbox2 the following:
- Import-Module Servermanager
- Add-WindowsFeature Web-WMI
downloaded sp2 and ran setup from GUI on cas server - ran into an issue with opening EMS and EMC and resolved following this article -
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2010/02/04/3409289.aspx using item 1 and item
once the problem got resolved, downloaded RU2 and install, than proceeded with
hub, mailbox1 and mailbox2 , this time using
Setup /Mode:Upgrade /InstallWindowsComponents on these servers, and no issues encountered.
After each server got upgraded. I verified mail flow before installation of the next server role. This helps me troubleshoot if things do go wrong.
I also have BES server running, and I make sure I have the following throttling policy set.
BlackBerry enterprise throttling policy
Set-ThrottlingPolicy BESPolicy -RCAMaxConcurrency $null -RCAPercentTimeInAD $null -RCAPercentTimeInCAS $null -RCAPercentTimeInMailboxRPC $null
