What does the ACT DCP actually do on the client pc its installed on ?

I have read the technet details on how it collects a list of applications installed on the client and and compares that to a compatability database once analysed on the ACT server by the user, but there is no detailed information on how it interacts with the client pc other than collect information on what applications are installed and how they interact with the OS and compares that to a compatibility list with microsoft and community experiences.

What else does DCP monitor on the client pc once installed when the services are running, does it interact with the registry or other areas of the OS, and how does it actually test for compatibility other than comparing against a known database of programs at microsoft and the comunity.

I am currently looking at installing this client on a number of our companys clients but I have concerns as to what the DCP  actually does, the actual workings of the DCP application and services interaction with the OS and programs installed.

Is there a more detailed document available on technet or somewhere else ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Alex.

By default there are compatibility evaluators included with the agent that you send to the machines. This agent will hook into each application that is run and report back if the application for instance is using deprecated features in the OS, if the app will have UAC interference when run on Windows 7 etc etc. This information is listed in the application console.

What happens when you have inventoried all machines is that you can do a send/receive to a Microsoft database. When you do that you send the list of all your apps and get a result back with compatibility information from vendors and other users that have used the tool to report if an app works or not.

    Hi,

    Many thanks for the reply.

Just to confirm, as I need to be 100% correct when I put forward the use of the application to my Director, do the compatibility evaluators actually watch how the application runs and don't just compare the compatibility of the applications from a database at Microsoft and the community experiences.

I understand the send and receive part then checks against the Microsoft database and community results.

    Thanks in advance!,

Yes, when the compatibility evaluators are included with the agent (they are by default) the agent will hook into all exe:s that are run on the machine, looking at API calls and whatever tricks the applications are trying to pull on the machine. It will then put this info in a log file and send it for processing regularly to your ACT log processing machine.
