I have downloaded and burned both the x86 and x64 versions of Win7, and have attempted to install them both via the autorun menu while in XP 64 and on boot. Both methods lead to the same result, the process freezing during the Win7 "Starting Windows" splash screen. When I reboot and check the Windows Setup diagnostic from the boot menu it says that winboot.exe is missing or corrupt.

    Specs:
    AMD Athlon 64 4400+ @ 2.2GHz
    Radeon X1600

Now, you won't be able to install the x86 version from within an XP x64 installation. Your only option there is an upgrade from XP x64 to Win7 x64.

Also, have you tried installation from a DVD-based boot, rather than from within the booted (XP x64) operating system?

What type of DVD drive is installed in your system.... EIDE or SATA?

What is the video configuration of the machine, and are you using a VGA/Analog based monitor connection or a DVI/Digital based monitor connection?

I have the same problem as cliff f has. I am installing from xp 32, i tried to upgrade vista 32, i did installation in other friend’s laptop with same vga card, and it was working in there but not with me. I have taken out his laptop hard disk and put in mine laptop with windows 7 rc installed but didn’t work for me. I did full format the hd and boot from dvd when win7 "starting windows" splash screen comes and it stay for hours nothing happened. Windows 7 beta is working fine, I think the problem is in vga bios and i have phoenix bios, it has very limited options. I don’t know how to solve this problem.

With only a 64mb video card, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the video card is not supported for Win7. First, the video hardware needs to support WDDM drivers. Second, the hardware, specifically, needs to have a WDDM v1.1 driver for use with Win7 (though some WDDM v1.0 Vista drivers will work in Win7).

Given the installed RAM, which establishes the approximate vintage of the card, (never mind that we've not identified the actual manufacturer or chipset), I'd be very surprised if the manufacturer of this chipset/card even has a Vista (much less a Win7 pre-release) driver.

My inclination is that your notebook simply falls into the "hardware not supported" class, and it'll be relegated to running Windows XP for the rest of its useful life.

The above comments are not true. In the posting I started "Win7#1Failure#2Success" my latest posting, edited, dated 15 June follows:

15 June - result of latest attempt

My #1 system is 64-bit capable but, so far, I've been unable to get Win7 RC 64-bit to install - got a BSOD about multipleprocessor_configuration and that was it.

As I had a copy of Windows XP Pro x64 180-day tial version I decided to try it - it installed just fine and I updated it to SP2 plus all Microsoft listed updates as of yesterday.

Then I decided to try and see if Win7 RC 32-bit would install on system #1 and it did just that. Who would have guessed that would happen?

So now on system #1 I have a triple-boot configuration: Win7 RC 32-bit, XP Pro w/SP3 updated, and XP Pro x64 w/SP2 updated. Now I'll finally be able to check out Win7 on the better of my two systems.

I have no idea as to why Win7 RC 32-bit was able to install from within XP Pro x64 as opposed to Win XP pro x86 but that's for others to determine.

I know why the x86 install won't work from within XP x64. However I get the same issue when I do it from power-on using a DVD boot. It's at exactly the same place as if I did the install from within XP and had to reboot, it freezes when the Win7 logo is pulsing and it says "Starting Windows". All is fine until at some point the DVD stops spinning and the screen freezes.

I'm still using an EIDE DVD drive, and I'm currently using my VGA port on my vid card as my display has a goofy setup where it doesn't display in its native resolution if I use DVI.

This is the key point I was driving at. If the package won't install from a raw DVD-boot, then it may well be a hardware compatibility issue. Typically the cause, at the point where you're observing the freeze, is due to video hardware/driver issues.

Thank you for clarifying that you are using an EIDE DVD drive and the VGA port on your video card, as that allows us to eliminate those two common causes for installation issues.

Next question: What is the manufacturer/model/chipset of your video card?

And your comment "..has a goofy setup where it doesn't display in its native resolution [with] DVI.." certainly raises my eyebrows as suspecting the compatibility of the video card is a likely cause.

(never mind that we've not identified the actual manufacturer or chipset),

Intel® 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics controller and VGA BIOS ver: Montara-GME3360. yes aero is not supported on my video card, i did windows 7 upgrade adviser, it never said the video card is not support. upgrade adviser says you can upgrade but backup all data and then do a clean installation. i am surprised my friends laptop have same graphics controller "Intel® 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics controller" windows 7 rc was working there.

Does your friend's laptop have the same systemboard, and BIOS revision, as you have installed in yours.

Observing that the chipset does support Win7 on your friend's laptop is useful information.

That leaves us with the "Why does it hang on yours" question -- and, of course, we're still assuming it's a video issue --- there are other possible hardware issues that could be at fault here, as well.

The answer is this, using the imagex app in the windows aik to add nonboot essential drivers during windows setup. It is a pain and I have only done this once with my newer laptop just so I had a vista sp2 disc with all my drivers. Now I am doing it with my older pc to see if it will work because it hangs without the driver for the nvidia geforce fx 5500. Here is the link and you will have to do the reading on how. It will take some work, I'm sorry, and microsoft will hopefully add this to an automatic part of the disc if done from an upgrade inside of a loaded os, but for a fresh boot this is the only option as they cannot bog down the disc with every supported driver for every card, especially dating back the age of mine. Here is the link on how to do it, wish me luck as I will do the same for you.

I may have worded it incorrectly earlier. The answer is to create an answer file to boot these drivers BEFORE the PE environment.

"If you need boot-critical drivers for Windows PE, use the windowsPE configuration pass to reflect the drivers before the Windows PE image is booted. The difference between adding boot-critical drivers during the WindowsPE configuration and the OfflineServicing configuration pass is that, during the WindowsPE configuration pass, boot-critical drivers are reflected for use by Windows PE and other drivers are staged to the Windows PE driver store. Then, during the offlineServicing configuration pass, the drivers in the Windows PE driver store are staged to the driver store on the Windows image.

When you add additional out-of-box drivers during the auditUser or auditSystem configuration passes, you must use Sysprep to boot to audit mode. This method can be helpful if you want to maintain a simple Windows image, and then add only the drivers that are required for a specific hardware configuration."

The answer might be on the following page detailing it in the use of windows aik (also available in the windows OPK I suppose!!! If anyone wants to help me get a copy I will happily do the legwork to find out!!!)

I tested whether it was a driver issue by taking out peices such as the video card and running installation while plugged to another system. tested this and it was not an issue with this. I stumbled along another forum and realized a comment made about the ram. I was running 3 1g ddr 400mhz, two in a dual channel and one by itself. I took the standalone out and it started from the installation disc without a problem. So I am going to run it, update, then add in the other ram. This could be an acpi issue or some memory controller issue. Just something to look into. hope this helps you.

Meanwhile, if it is a driver issue, the procedure would be to create an answer file referring to the driver location with the windows sim found in the aik. then to add in the drivers to the install wim using imagex. after this, you must boot to a dos prompt if doing a clean install, then start setup referencing the answer file created (which should have the drivers load with the PE). This is a couple related links on the driver solution.

These pages should be sufficieent to get you well on your way to resolving a driver related installation issue. It would be nice if these pages could be cross-referenced on top of the listing as a section inside of how to use certain programs or perform certain processes. It took time and research to track down all of these pages, if they were referenced as similar pages at the bottom of the page, similar to how the downloads section gives related downloads at the bottom of the page, it could expediate the resolution of technical issues. Thank you for all the time and effort that went into the engineering of this software!

And remember my problem was that of ram, so check it out.

    Sorry for the late reply.

My card is the "Sapphire ATI Radeon X1650 PRO (100164DDR2BLU) 256MB PCIe x16 Gen 1.0". It's an old card I got back in like 2k5/2k6. As for the "goofy setup" thing, I sorted that out by checking my display's documentation, it turns out that I can't display the display's max resolution through DVI input, only through VGA input. Even with that I doubt that's the problem because "winboot.exe is corrupt or missing" doesn't seem to be a driver incompatibility error. The card will definitely work:

A PC with these minimum recommended specifications:
    - 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor or higher
    - 1 GB of system memory or more
    - 16 GB of available disk space
    - Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
    - DVD-R/W Drive

My concern now is I think I've been burning half-done coasters. I'll be looking into a new drive, or one of my spares sitting around unless you have a better idea of what's wrong here.
