LAN connection drops occasionally when using Internet Explorer or Torrent transfers
- Hi there,
Ever since I installed Windows 7 on my machine, I have been occasionaly losing the connection to my LAN when using either Internet Explorer or other programs that use torrent protocol. The problem can be fixed by disabling and re-enabling the connection - or troubleshooting the connection, but it takes windows way too long to puzzle out the problem.
Oddly enough; online games such as World of Warcraft have never caused me to lose my connection.
Despite how simple it is to temporarily fix the problem, it does reappear eventually - could be a few seconds to an hour - and that can be very annoying if a large file is being downloaded and gets interrupted -- or just plain annoying in general.
No other machines on my network (XP, Vista) or even the XP on my machine with 7 have this problem, so I'm guessing that this is some problem with 7.
Any suggestions?

Is your connection Wired or wireless? What Torrent Client are you using? Have you got the latest version of the NIC drivers installed? Are any event notifications recorded in event viewer? if your connection is wired can you try a different port on your switch/hub?
Sorry for bombarding you with a host of questions for a response, but one of them may shed some light on the issue...
Cheers. Oh yes, sorry for not specifying. I am using a wired connection to my router.
Also, the event viewer records or displays no notifications; I just simply see a yellow exclamation on top of icon for the connection in the notification area.
And I use the utorrent client. I'll try switching which port my wire is connected to on the router, but it is late in my area so I will not be able to check if that resolves the problem until tomorrow afternoon (roughly 13:00 GMT)
I don't know what a NIC driver does, so if the latest version didn't come bundled with Windows 7 or its updates, then I probably don't have it.- Switching the port that my wire is connected to dit not resolve the problem.
My computer does not always realise that there is a problem immediately; Internet Explorer may be stuck on "Waiting for http:\\............." or a download may be frozen for several seconds until the network icon in the notification area changes to an exclamation mark. I have some new info on the problem.
I was using the flashget download manager and I took screenshots of the logs when my connection dropped. I have two different examples:
the first time, my connection simply closed.
The second time, the log was spewing out all of this garbage, then it automatically tried0 to log in with some sort of network password I guess, then it says that only 10 downloads are allowed from the same IP.
That is the only download occuring! As far as I know, I am not using a proxy. I am using a router, but I was the only one connected at that time. I have had several problems in the past about not being able to download from a site because another download was occuring from the same IP (which I do not understand), but I was never having any connection failures until Windows 7.
This is a link to the first failure:

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/3273/connectionfailure2.png- That second image contains addressing from somewhere in China, and looks to be some kind of Trojan or downloader, maybe. What Antivirus are you running on your RC and when was your last update/full scan?
- I use Avast Antivirus as my virus protection which is updated almost every day. I haven't done a scan for about two weeks but the on-access protection catches everything anyway. I was having these problems since day 1 of installing 7, so I don't think that the problem is a virus. I'll do a scan, but it will most likely come back clean.
I could be connected to an IP in China because I'm not too far geographically to them (United Arab Emirates) there may be a relay to the Microsoft server in America that I was downloading from.

- Try disabling realtime protection in Windows Security EssentialsI had the exact same issue on my Windows 7 64 bit install. After hours of searching to see what was causing the issue, I found that Windows Security Essentials was the problem.Internet started working normal again after disabling realtime protection. Since my internet worked just fine after just installing Windows 7, it's probably some update to security essentials that messed some things up.Let me know if this solves your issues...

- ok so the connection has not been fixed. it just does it less often now. How do I get to security essentials? Does it come with the 7 RC? because I don't think I have it.
