已答复 Management WTR Package

I'm trying to set up Server Manager to handle/manage some S2008R2 servers. But, when I click on All Servers, for these S2008R2 servers, I get the message

"Not accessible - Verify earlier versions of Windows run the Management WTR package"

What is this package and how do I install it on my S2008R2 servers?

Having the same question here...? I have a domain with about 6 servers with different OS setups. It would be nice to manage them from one point. But  what needs to be build to get this up.

Ok this is solving the issue i think :)

Support for 2003 is not available for what i can see, thats a bit of a bummer.

    Same problem here.

Is there a full manual available to solve the problem : "Not accessible - Verify earlier versions of Windows run the Management WTR package"

    Hi,

To use this release of Server Manager or Windows PowerShell to access and manage remote servers that are running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you must first install .NET Framework 4, and then install the Windows Management Framework Targeted Release (WTR) package on those servers. Server Manager in Windows Server “8” Beta or Windows 8 Consumer Preview cannot fully manage other Windows operating systems until updated Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) providers are installed on those systems. The updated WMI providers let Server Manager collect information about roles and features that are installed on the managed servers. For more information, see Windows Management Framework 3.0 on the Microsoft Download Center. Until the update is applied, servers that are running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 have a manageability status of Not accessible – Verify earlier versions of Windows run the Management WTR package.

    Authur,

What a sense of humor you have!

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/itprola/archive/2012/04/11/manage-server-2008-servers-in-server-quot-8-quot.aspx

This is a total joke, right? What language is this - Swedish, Norwegian?

    Good Job.

However, no matter what the language is, the article quotes:

     http://www.jamesbannanit.com/2012/03/manage-server-2008-r2-from-windows-8-server/

which does have the information one needs to solve this problem.

So, reluctantly, I'm marking your response as Answer.

    Arthur,

OK, I downloaded the WMF 3.0 package and tried to install it.

    Almost immediately I get:

    "[Main Instruction]
    Windows Update Standalone Installer

    [Content]
    Installer encountered an error: 0x80096002

The certificate for the signer of the message is invalid or not found."

I checked the properties of the package and the Digital Signatures tab shows a certicicate from MS dated 29 April 2012.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Tomas,

I'm the QA lead at Microsoft for Windows PowerShell.  Could you tell us a little about your configuration?  Specifically:

    1.  What operating system are you installing the package on?  Is it Server 2008, Windows 7 Client, or Server 2008 R2?

    2.  What service pack do you have installed?  (Minimum required is SP2 for Server 2008 or SP1 for Win7/Server 2008 R2, both with the latest updates from Windows Update.)

    3.  Is this an English-language machine, or is it localized?  Are you using a language pack?

    4.  Probably not the issue, but can you confirm that .Net 4.0 or 4.5 is installed?

(The only case where I've seen this error message before is when you try to install the package on a Windows 8 machine.)

    Thanks

Jon, Since the is a W8 Server forum, it holds to reason that we are discussing behavior on a W8 Server.

Yep - I get that.  However, the WTR package is an OS update that needs to be applied to the downlevel servers you're managing, not to the Windows 8 machine where Server Manager is running.  Essentially, when you install WTR on your Server 2008 R2 machine, you're updating the server side components for WMI, WS-Man, and PowerShell, so a Windows 8 machine can talk to it using the new Windows 8 management tools.

    Thanks
