I had a emergency security bulletin that I had to push out the other day. I decided to merge Adobe reader 9.1 with update 9.1.1 and 9.1.2. It worked well. I then created a new Group Policy created the package and placed the group Policy on our Production Workstations OU.  After restarting the workstations it installed beutifully and showed up as the correct version in Add Remove Programs.

No even after it has installed why does it always have to try to reinstall each time the PC's start?  How can I stop this?

This is annoying and looks bad to our customer's.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the post.

From your description, I understand that the Adobe reader package is reinstalled every time clients log on to the Domain even though it has been installed successfully via Group Policy.

Given this situation, I would like to confirm if this issue just occurs on Windows XP-based machine.

If so, please understand that this problem occurs when both of the following conditions are true:

The domain users are configured with roaming user profiles.

The domain or organizational unit where the users are located has a Group Policy that is configured to remove cached copies of roaming profiles.

This problem occurs because when you configure a policy to remove cached copies of roaming profiles, the DeleteProfile function is called to delete all user-related settings and to remove the per-user Microsoft Windows Installer package information from the following folder location when the user logs off:

    System32\AppMgmt\User-SID

When the user next logs on to the domain, other related Windows Installer information in the registry hive of the user is downloaded from the server where the roaming profile is stored. The program installation engine then reinstalls the assigned package to match the information in the registry hive of the user.

To troubleshoot this issue, we may need to perform the steps provided in the following article:

An Assigned Package Is Reinstalled Every Time Clients Log on to the Domain

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/828452

    Does it work?

If this problem continues, please collect the Setup&Performance version of MPSReport from the problematic client machine.

    a. Download the MPS Report Tool from the following link:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

    b. After the download is complete, double-click this " MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE" file. Then a CAB file will be generated called %COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. For example, if your computer name is "MyComputer", this CAB file will be named "MyComputer_MPSReports.CAB".

    c. Open My Computer, browse to the "%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Logs\CAB" folder. You can find the CAB file above and please send it to me.

Use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address.

    Hope this helps.
