Can someone explain what the real differences are? And why you might use one over the other?

    Hi,

There are two way of deploying remote desktops:

Shared hosted- > One big Windows Server 2012 server with Remote Desktop Services enabled that will accept multiple sessions simultaneous. Apps running on this platform must support Mulit-user enviroments. Depending on hardware resources 100 to 200 sessions per server are possible http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Desktop_Services

VDI -> Virtual Machine running Windows 7 or Windows 8 that the users connect to.  Usually you can host somewhere between 30-50 VM's on a big server. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_virtualization

There are many reasons why you would choose any of these solutions. The use case or business case and requirements can determine the right choice.
