    I am aware that VMM 2010 will no longer support  SQL express which was popular for the Workgroup edition, but will there even be a Workgroup edition of VMM 2012 I have not been able to find any information about this.

    As far as I know, SC 2012 Workgroup edition (and Essentials) will not be realized.

    for now there are only Standard and Datacenter editions

    Hi Jim, I think you mean VMM 2008 R2?  There is no VMM 2010 version as far as I'm aware. 

    The SCVMM 2008 R2 workgroup edition allowed the management of up to 5 Hyper-V hosts.  The licensing for System Center 2012 has changed to either SC2012 Standard or SC2012 Datacenter -and these licenses include the SCVMM server component + SQL license - so as long as you get one of these new licenses for the host that is being managed you can deploy VMM with SQL (SCVMM 2012 requires a full version of SQL Standard).

    If you had previously brought the VMM2008 R2 Workgroup edition and if it is under SA, it might be entitled to an upgrade to 1 x SC2012 Standard license but you would need to verify this with the LARs.
