    Issue
There is an issue that is preventing some users from connecting their Windows Mobile devices to the Windows 7 beta.  This has been identified as an issue on the Windows Update server and is being addressed.  In the short term there is a work around the will unblock users and I want to make sure that the message gets into the hands of the users and the support technicians who might get calls on this issue.  Since there is a good change that Support teams from the operators may be getting hit with this issue I figured it would be a good idea to pass the information along to you.

    Work Around

Some Windows Mobile users are experiencing a driver install error when they first connect their Windows Mobile device to a PC running the Windows 7 beta.  We have identified the cause of this issue and are in the process of reposting the driver package to the Windows update beta server. In the mean time, you can work around this issue by installing WMDC by visiting the WMDC download page.

It is important that you install WMDC before connecting your device to your PC.  However if you have already connected your device and received the Driver failed to install error message, you can resolve the issue by removing the devices generic RNDIS driver entry from Device Manager.

    • Disconnect your device for your PC
    • From the start Menu open the control panel
    • Select “Hardware and Sound” then “Device Manager”
    • Now connect your device to you PC so that the associated driver shows up under “Network adapter”
    • Right click on the driver and select Uninstall

At this point disconnect your device, install WMDC if you haven’t already done so and the reconnect your device.  WMDC should recognize the device and complete the driver install.

I too had the same problem, posting my fix here as i also had a thread.. To solve this here is what I did step by step.. hope this helps... you may/may not need to do all of this but it worked for me...

1: I uninstalled the WMDC and restarted the computer
2: With the phone NOT connected via usb (and since i have not gotten a good sync the bluetooth did not connect yet either), I went into my HTC Fuze   Start --> Settings --> Connections --> USB to PC and unchecked Enable advanced network functionality.
3: Pluged in the USB cable...
4: It started the configuration, ran thru it and the ActiveSync / Sync screen came up and sucessfully sync to my PC/Outlook..

I am thinking the updated driver (in previous answer above) could not connect to the phone because of the advanced option..and thus crashed when trying to load..

    Hope this helped..

I had to uninstall WMDC and do a reinstall.  I got things working, eventually, with the extended funciton check.  A few uninstalls and re-installs needed.

Why is Windows Mobile always an afterthought at Microsoft.  No wonder they are losing the mobile battle to Apple and Google.  I've been using WM since the initial iPaq, but MS makes it hard to stay with the devices.

Pity I hadn't read this before as well. I had the same problem with my T-Mobile Vario III (HTC TyTn II) phone on Windows 7. I was surprised that Device Stage didn't kick in. Windows Mobile Device Centre was provided on a CD with the phone for use with Vista, so I tried to install it. It only reached 99% of the install procedure and then hung. After a couple of attempts and a reboot, it eventually recognised the phone and created a sync partnership. This was done via a cable connection - next is to try via bluetooth.

Will users have to install Windows Mobile Device Centre in the final version? I hope not.

Got the exactly same issue with my HTC Herald on a teachers Smartbook with Vista Ultimate x64.
I'll try friday if the workarround works for vista as well.

     コードあり

I was having the same problem.

I installed WMDC from the link in the first post. It came up with an error that the drivers wouldn't install. I plugged my phone in anyway and it still didn't work.

I rebooted and then plugged my phone in - got a message that drivers were installing which they did successfully. The phone then connected to WMDC.

So, everything works (haven't tried a sync yet - see below).

Now I wanted to get PocketMirror working. It supports Vista so assumed it would support Windows 7 (as it's the same WMDC). However when trying to install it I get the error that it could not detected ActiveSync. I will post to Chapura tech support without mentioning this is Windows 7 (as they will just use the 'unsupported' excuse rather than listening that it is the same WMDC version).

Anyway, to complicate matters I am actually running Windows 7 in a VM. To connect your phone under VMWare Workstation, see this post.

    Hi,

I have been using the Beta since yesterday. Speed and overall compatibility are amazing. Got all minor problems quickly solved on my own. The only problem left, is the sync with my HTC Touch Diamond.

I have been trying every trick I could think of and following every trick I found on the net. Yet it's still not working at all.

When I connect my Diamond via USB, nothing happens at all. Installation of WMDC works, but with an error during driver install. Connecting the Diamond afterwards: nothing happens.
Disabling the Adv. network functionality, doesn't improve the situation. Soft resetting didn't help either.
Trying the trick from the first post, doesn't work, the phone does not appear in the list.

Does anyone have an idea, how i can get this running?

    Hi,
I also have a HTC TYTn II (in the form of a Stellar XDA from O2). It is connected via a cradle and a USB to the computer and it was connected up at the point when I installed Win 7 Beta build 7000 on to a fresh hard drive.  The installation was smooth and the phone connected automatically.  It now connects automatically whenever I replace it on the cradle and syncs when required with Windows Mobile Device Centre.

This experience is different from Anthony_Mann's experience in that the phone was connected to the PC before installation began.  Interesting to identify whether that made a difference.

During the installation procedure of Windows 7, my phone was not connected to the computer. I did that on purpose, since having it connected once during a Vista installation ended in a totally unstable device relationship....

I have a HTC xv6800 that worked perfectly under Vista Ultimate x64. That is  sadly not the case under Win 7 Beta. I have uninstalled the WMDC several times to no avail. I get no sync or any sign that the OS even registers the device at all. Win XP SP3 is much the same.

By the way the device is Windows Mobile 6.1.

I have an HP Ipaq rx1950, running Windows Mobile 5.   After installing Windows 7, i can't get Mobile Device Center to work AT ALL.  I have followed the directions at the beginning of this post several times, but to no avail.

Installing WMDC 6.1 seems to fail, and says that the device driver update fails.   interestingly enough, it says that the device is disconnected....well, of course it is, I was told to disconnect it before installing.

I've rebooted the machine, and when I connect the device, the generic RNDIS driver appears to install, and I get flagged to install Office OneNote Mobile to my device.  Clearly the device is being recognized at least by the system.

Running WMDC, however, fails.  If i don't get the error message that it has failed and needs to close, I just get the WMDC screen with a spinning dotted line in the lower left saying, "connecting".  The Help/About screen shows the version as 6.1.6965.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanx

After two months of not being able to sync my phone, it just started working yesterday without having changed anything (I usually charge my phone via USB and instead of just charging it started synchronising immediatly)... interesting behaviour I'd say.

Maybe the Windows 7 RC will solve the problems!

It's not that it's preventing them from connecting. The problem is WMDC is completly missing from the RC release where as with Vista, and 7 Beta the WMDC was released with the OS.  With that in mind loading basic driver after the intallation of WMDC should solve most problems. (no guarentees, lol)

In Windows 7 RC the WMDC runs like a charm. I plugged the phone in immediately after installation, it recognized the device, download the drivers and WMDC and has been working without flaws ever since...

Tried to connect my Windows Mobile 6 phone to my Windows Seven RC Laptop.

Got an very unclear error message : "connexion in progress" then "error"

Went to this forum and dealed with all the stuff described at the top, then got a working connection.

So, would it be possible to :
    - have a more clear error message
    - BETTER : include WMDC in W7RC ?

    Thanks.

I also had problems connecting my PDA to windows 7. Re-installing windows Mobile Device center did not help. I kept getting an error loading an unknown USB device and driver failed to install.

I realized that the PDA already had two sync session set up. One with my work laptop and one with the home vista laptop I upgraded to Windows 7. I deleted the partnership off the PDA from the vista laptop and was then able to connect to Windows 7 and syn without any issue.

    Hope this helps.

    Alex.

I installed Windows 7 RC but no WMDC! I could use the cell to go on the internet using internet sharing but not sync. Eventually I found WMDC 6.1 on MS site downloaded and installed and everything works fine. Had a similar problem with my Canon IP5200 printer downloaded the Vista printer driver and it works fine to! It seems the Vista drivers work well in windows 7 RC
