Locked ISA in a Workgroup

    Hi

    We have a hotel network with Wired and Wireless devices. We need to use a caching device and limit bandwidth for users based on Ip addresses. Can ISA Server work in a workgroup environment and provide caching and bandwidth managment (Traffic Shaping) facility with some kind of software like bandwidth splitter or we have to use a hardware device for this.

    Any suggestions and recommendations?

      Hi,

      it is possible to implement ISA Server in workgroup scenarios but ISA Server has no builtin Bandwidth management (except Diffserv for HTTP protocols only) so you need a third party solution for ISA Server

        Can bandwidth splitter work in workgroup env on isa? What about isa caching. Can caching also work well?

          Yes, you can use bandwidth splitter in workgroup environment as well as ISA caching. For difference of workgroup and domain, you may refer to this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc608251.aspx

            That is strange. A Few days ago somebody from other forum told me that it works with domain networks only. Anyhow i will try again.

            One more thing. Can the clients in a workgroup use caching feature without enabling proxy in IE because the clients are hotel customers and it is difficult to ask everybody to use proxy to use internet.

            Or can we use transparent proxy in a workgroup env with only a single ISA Server? I know that they will be secureNat clients but is there a possibility for this kind of setup?

              Hi,

               

              Thank you for the update.

               

              Do you have any problem installing bandwidth splitter in ISA workgroup mode? I have tested it in my ISA workgroup environment, and it seems working well.  

               

              “Can the clients in a workgroup use caching feature without enabling proxy”- yes, By default, HTTP connections from SecureNAT and Firewall clients are automatically forwarded to the Web Proxy filter. The advantage of this configuration is that both SecureNAT and Firewall clients are able to benefit from the ISA firewall’s Web Proxy cache.

               

              If using SecureNAT client, the requests will be forwarded transparently to the Firewall service of ISA Server, and then passed to the Web Proxy service.  But in single-NIC mode, ISA does not support SecureNAT client and Firewall clients.
