Vista keeps freezing :(
-
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오전 5:17I am running Windows Vista on my Gateway laptop and recently have been having problems. My computer freezes within 10 - 30 minutes or so (time varies) after I log on. Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't work... it just freezes. It doesn't matter if I log in and don't even touch the keyboard/mouse, or if I am browsing something via Firefox... it just freezes. Today, it even froze at the log in screen. I turned the comp on after it froze... left for 5-10 minutes... came back to the log in screen and the computer was frozen
I tried a whole bunch of stuff. My virus protector Avast found some trojans but that didnt help.. I used another virus finder and it found something but i'm pretty sure it got rid of it (?) and I've used CWShredder and the Hijackthis file gave me this output:

So everything here looks fine I believe.
I've also ran ad-aware and uninstalled a bunch of programs.. and now the newest programs I downloaded are month away since this problem started, so I doubt I have any programs causing this problem. And I tried windows update only after the problem has occurred. So I am kind of stuck here. Right now I am using Safe Mode with Networking which seems to work fine.
I feel that this could of happened because of the Windows Updates. I did some updates on 7/10 which caused errors in downloading more updates and that I believe was the moment that my comp started to freeze. With the brief 5-10 (sometimes time < 1) that I have in regular mode, I went to Windows Update to see if that would help and theres a Media Center update that wouldn't let me update. Instead, I received the error code of 80073712. Spending a long time researching this code, the answers that microsoft provided (i.e Storedirty) do not help fix this problem (no registry is there..). The only thing others said to work is to reinstall Vista. But I cant do that! I have gigs and gigs worth of material that I have not transferred over to CD that would need at least 20minutes per CD to copy over but I can't do that since I only have around 5 minutes before a comp freeze.
So now all in all I think that the Update has caused the problem... although I am still not sure.
I would love some help and would appreciate any help given to me by anyone.

2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 2:07ok you more or less afraid of reinstalling vista becuase of suff you have... if you did a customer/clean install with out formating files would be their. but no programs would be their ex. office, firefox, etc... so if im taken this woung just say so. and as per that error did you try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB931712?
-
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 3:35I am just a little weary of doing any kind of clean install because of the risk of losing any sort of data. And yes, I have tried that Microsoft fix, but it does not work and apparently doesn't work for many many people.
-
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 4:24dop you have another comp, you could tansfer that way, i understand the risk but files would be in windows.old. have you tried an sfc scan?
-
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 5:11I have another computer. But how can I transfer 50 gigs worth of information easily from one comp to the next?
I am not exactly sure what a sfc scan is or how to work one. -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 5:16
how to do an sfc scan
windows pearl>allprograms>accessoires>command prompt (right click and runt as admin)
Command: sfc /scannow
have you tried a clean boot in normal mode, and if your unsure of using over comp don't worry about it, do you have an external HD? -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 6:33I am running the sfc scan now. I am doing it in Safe mode because I don't want it to freeze half way in normal. Is that okay? Or does it have to be ran in normal mode.
And unfortunately I do not have an external HD. And what do you mean by a clean boot in normal mode? -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 6:36
going into msconfig (just type it in start search) disable start up iteams and non microsoft services. the reason this is a suggestion because it freezes in normal mode not safe mode and the difference in safe mode to normal is start up items, services, and non plug and play drivers (suggestion to never touch unless you have an OS CD) -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 6:58Well I ran the scan in Safe mode so far and this is what I got:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them."
"Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."
The log... which seems to be pages and pages long... I am not sure how to disect.
I will try the msconfig, but which ones do I disable? Aren't there some Microsoft startup services that could be very harmful to disable? The weird thing was that one time it froze at the sign in screen... before any programs could be loaded up. -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 7:00only start up items to be worried about are wireless. but that if you can connect in safe mode with net, no issues. use hide microsoft in services
-
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 7:25Okay so I checked Hide all microsoft services and these are the only ones that I've left:
Windows Maintenance Monitor
SigmaTel Audio Service
Intel Matrix Storage Event
Let's see how this pans out. Are those okay to leave checked? -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 7:5110 minutes in and so far so good. I really hope it stays this way.
What is this "Windows Maintenance Monitor" that I left checked? It still remained in the visible field after I checked "Hide all Microsoft Services," and it was seen in my hijack this log:
O23 - Service: Windows Maintenance Monitor (wmoisvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\winrss.exe
Trying to find this on google, I can't seem to find anything on it. It looks like it seems to disguise itself as a Microsoft product? Is it harmful? -
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 7:53try it out for about an hour than use proccess of elimition to find which start up item or service it is, it sounds like somthing for power management
-
2007년 7월 16일 월요일 오후 8:43Now I've been an hour or so in without freezing and I am very surprised and happy
The most I believe it has gone without freezing was maybe 40 minutes once (with the average being 5-10 minutes). I'm gonna head off to work and I will be back in 6 hours or so. I'll be leaving the computer on and I still hope it doesn't freeze. That would be amazing.
Do you have any idea of what the Windows Maintenance Monitor is? It seems so... fake. -
2007년 7월 17일 화요일 오전 2:16Well I just came back from work and I see that my comp froze at 5:43 PM (EST)
So I think I am going to try do disable the Windows Maintenance Monitor and see how things go. -
2007년 7월 17일 화요일 오후 3:03allright, best of luck.
-
2007년 7월 18일 수요일 오전 2:56Well OutOfMyMind thank you so so much. I didn't disable the Windows Maintenance Monitor thing, but after it froze yesterday all I did was restart and it has been good since yesterday.Even left it on during work and everything is great so far. I am still unable to do Windows Updates but thats alright. So again, after struggling to find any answer for days I really appreciate that you were able to help me. You prove how one individual can have a very positive impact on another person by doing a good deed. Keep it up! And if you need anything from me, let me know.
Sincerely,
MicroHelp87 -

2007년 8월 23일 목요일 오전 5:47Thank you again OutOFMyMind, everything seems to be working fine.

Heya, I think I am experiencing a similar prob. Im running XP Home Edition - have the following error:
7/8/2007 12:42 AM Application Error Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16473, faulting module wrs.dll, version 1.0.0.1168, fault address 0x0001bad0.

My laptop is starting up heaps slow, im holding the power button to turn it off and if it starts up (eventually) when i use the net, explorer freezes up and crashes. Is this the same prob you have? So do I follow how you fixed your PC?Thanks ... sorry, if im totally off track. Michelle

Hi Microhelp87,
I have the same problem as you after running sfc /scannow and get exactly the same result as you do ie
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them."
"Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."
But the log file is massive and is not easily translated as to what exactly - is corrupted within it. Did you get a fix for this or has anyone got a clue how to resolve this issue that sfc throws up as an error ?Regards,
Richard

I get the same error code when I run Windows Update. My Vista 64 bit will no longer run Windows Update. -
2007년 9월 13일 목요일 오전 3:48
I have got same problem after running Windows Update on 08/21/07. Nothing new installed after last update and system runs fine except for Windows Update. I have got Vista Ultimate (32bit).
I think this is definitely a Microsoft problem that they are not yet admitting.

Hi There.. I was having exactly the same problems as you for many months and couldn’t explain it. I thought it was the cpu failing or maybe the power supply after I tried many other things like reg cure to clean out the registry.. using check disk utility and other programs as I thought the hard drive was about to die. I tried changing the ram, testing the ram... doing intensive spyware and virus testing.
I checked just about everything as I was sure the programs I was running were okay.. what was I sure of this??? I don’t know but I didn’t see there being any problems as I thought they would all have been extensively tested etc before being released to the public.
I got sick of it and couldn’t use my PC when I wanted to so I started shutting down different services in task manager and guess what. Every time I shut down diskeeper the freezing would stop and never started again until I rebooted the PC and diskeeper started back up!
THIS IS THE CULPRIT ->
O23 - Service: Diskeeper - Diskeeper Corporation - C:\Program Files\Diskeeper Corporation\Diskeeper\DkService.exe
Now I’m very disso pointed as I thought it was a great program and haven’t found any other defragmenter program to replace or rival it.. It couldn’t just be an error that occurred during installation or a conflict with another program or service that’s running; all I know is that based on the info you provided and my own experiences that disabling the DkService.exe will stop it freezing up. Please let me know after you try to confirm.
Good Luck

2009년 9월 17일 목요일 오전 12:22I have a similar problem. I have Vista on a Samsung R510 laptop and recently it keeps freezing every 2-30 mins.
I've tried restore but it doesn't help. When I start it in Safe Mode Withe Networking, I can't connect to the web.
I'm running Norton 360 and no scans are showing up anything. I only download trustworthy software.
Does anyone have any ideas?

2009년 10월 20일 화요일 오후 8:04Has anyone found a fix for this problem? I have tried everything listed here and none of this has fixed it. Luckily I will need a new laptop but that's not "do-able" quite yet lol. This is very aggitating; I see now new computers come with windows 7 - heaven help us that it's better than Vista...I've always hated vista, but if you want to downgrade - you gotta pay for it! Anyway, just wondering...since this post started in 2007 and there are now some from 2009, has anyone tried something that has worked?
