Visual C++ 2005 redist fails after failed SP2 upgrade attempt

I attempted to upgrade my SP1 Vista x64 business install to SP2. The upgrade failed with an unspecified error.

Since that time I have tried to install a Visual C++ 2005 redistributable. This fails with a similar error code, I suspect the issues may be related. The failed install results in the following entry in the CBS log,

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Reinstalling Vista is not an acceptable solution, and no suitable system restore points are available.
