질문How do I tell WMP12 to update the library?

Very simple scenario: I have a library with hundreds of folders and thousands of files. I decide to change the name of a folder (i.e. an album) and to modify some ID3 tags (with a third party tool) of the files (songs) within this folder.

WMP12 shows these files with the old tag information but it won't play the files because it can't find them. I try to delete the album from WMP12 with right-click and delete: nothing happens. The album remains there with wrong tags.

The only way out of this situation is to remove everything from the library (takes several minutes) and then add the whole library again (about 40 minutes).

So everytime I want to change a tag using a decent tag editor (let's not get started on the ATE issue) I need almost one hour before I can play that song again.

    Is there any other way?

By the way: I tried "apply media changes": it analyses the files for about 15 minutes but it doesn't do anything.

After feedback from Zachd that large mixed threads don't get addressed properly and information is lost, I have tried to isolate this problem in a new dedicated thread... result: no answer!

Is the fact that WMP12 happily ignores any changes to the file properties once such file is in the library considered a bug to be fixed or a "design feature"?
    Thanks.

Where are these songs located?  If they're on local NTFS, they should play fine through file tracking.  I closed the player (disabling the live updates), renamed a music folder, opened the player, played clips from that folder, and it Just Worked.  What steps or mechanics am I missing?

As regards to tag updates (as opposed to path updates), those should happen as WMP retrawls the music folders, which can take a while. Or you can just leave WMP open while doing these things, which will let it get notification changes in near real time and should avoid the problem altogether.

meta: It's a peer-supported community, TMK.  I have no idea what the expectations are as regards people jumping on and chiming in.  I definitely always have a zillion other things to do. :)

    Thanks for your reply.

Have you actually tried yourself to see if WMP12 eventually realises that the tags have changed? I can leave it running for hours and nothing happens; the old tags stay in the WMP12 database and they are never replaced with the new ones.

It seems I am not the only one with this problem. This is from the ATE thread:

    1) Change album tags around. Occasionally, the internet database will have the wrong track information or album information, and while you can use the right-click, then "Edit" interface to change things, it seems that WMP "remembers" the downloaded information when organizing the library. Here's a concrete example: I have purchased a box set of 6 CDs that I want to rip to my computer. The box set contains 11 original LP's, but the songs on the CDs are organized based on recording date. So, while I can change the "album" for each individual track as well as the "track number," WMP "remembers" the track numbers from the original CD and the original rip (based on the information downloaded from the Internet database), and there is absolutely no possible way (that I've discovered) to reorder the songs properly. For example, I have one album where the songs are organized (when in "Artist" view) in WMP 2, 4, 5, 1, 3 (instead of 1-5).

    3) Tag compatibility across programs. I have a Creative portable music player, and I've found that their program, Creative MediaSource, is helpful for editing tags. Unfortunately, it now seems that changes to tags on .wma files I make in this program are NOT reflected in my WMP library. Again, it seems that WMP "remembers" the information garnered from the internet and will not reflect the changes to tags I make.

    I was going to say:

To get the Library to update.

Go to Organize when in Library

    Hit 'Apply media information changes'

But realised what u were saying and had the same issue. When tracks are ripped from a CD, WMP12 stores the track info in ur regristry and the only way to get rid of it is to take a third party meta id tager and wipe out the regristry tags WMP puts on the track. Then you can go back into WMP and mess with the tabes all you want and it will listen to you this time.

I have a link to how I did it.

Thanks. I'll check what values I have in those extended fields. However I don't rip my CDs with WMP and I don't let WMP download information from the internet so I am not sure it's exactly the same problem.
I do all tag editing "manually/locally". I used to use WMP11 but since I installed Windows7 I had to switch to mp3tag.
My experience is that, once WMP12 has recorded tag values in its database, any change is ignored unless it's done via its own internet info retrieval service.

What's an exact and specific scenario where the player fails in this fashion?

What file type am I starting with with what tag version?
What tool do I use to edit those tags?
Where is the file located with what file system type?

    I'd assume your repro is:
    1) have clip with tags
    2) add to player library, close player
    3) edit tags with editor X
    4) reopen player
, but the above data points would fill in gaps. :)

Yes that is the sequence. To give more details:

    - Initially I rip to mp3 on a temporary folder on a local NTFS drive with ExactAudioCopy which inserts ID3v1 and ID3v2.3 tags.
    - I use mp3tag to add album art (WMP12 trashes my files if I use it to add album art but that's another story)
    - when finished I move the files into the proper folder in the directory tree associated with the music library (which is on another local NTFS drive)
    - I open WMP12, the new files are found and they appear in the WMP12 library

So far so good and with most files I don't touch the tags anymore so everything is fine, however let's say that I find out that the album name tag is wrong and I want to change it....

    - I close WMP12
    - I open mp3tag again and point it to the folder when the files currently are
    - I edit the album name tag for all files (as far as I understand mp3tag edits both the ID3v1 tag and the ID3v2.3 tag)
    - I close mp3tag and re-open WMP12

At this point the album name information in the WMP12 is still the old one and it NEVER changes.

As a side comment: I must admit that I feel like an idiot with my attempts to keep using WMP12: the sad reality is that it can't rip properly, it can't tag properly, it can't maintain a library properly.... at this stage WMP12 is just a very convoluted playback tool and I should get rid of it full stop. Using WMP12 is like driving a 20 year old car and finding out every day that it's leaking oil, the brakes are gone, the battery is almost flat and so on... at one point it's just time to change to a new car.

    4 real

I would use my zune player to play my music except Win 7 likes moving my Shortcut icons around.

Plus WMP internet meta tagger usually gets my songs right and I'm to lazy about it to really care aslong as it gets the artist and song title right i'm good to go.

Also I never saved music in mp3 form since WMP 9 was out. Back then Mp3 took up way too much room espesically when you only had a 40gb hard drive.

So my only problem with WMP 12 is that it won't let you completely retag your songs and it won't remember to list my library by title and not by artist when i re-enter the program.
