I have been trying to update the TV guide in WMC and continue to fail.  This has been ongoing since 12-25-11, but just found out 2 days ago.  I have tried several fixes without a solution. Win 7 OS, Hauppage WinTV 1250 card.

    Event log:

7:07:19 AM - Testing internet connection. 7:07:19 AM - Connection established. 7:07:19 AM - Retrieving Directory.

7:07:19 AM - Failed to retrieve Directory (Error: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive.)

I have tried checking and changing the duration, removed the mcepg db and set up TV signal, I have tried using the DNS fixed settings changes previously described.  I have tried using different zip codes.

I have comcast cable in eastern WA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have also tried the "run mcupdate.exe as admin while MCE is open" fix.

I just found a log event for a cisco vpn set of errors at about the same time.  I am unsure if this would reset or change anything.

are you logged into a corp network via VPN?

please paste these error messages into a reply.

there was a widespread guide update issue around XMAS, but it was resolved.

I'd set your DNS settings back to what they were previously as well.

    Hi Barb,

I only log into the vpn to use terminal services for work, not for other uses.  I log out and quit the vpn after I am done.

error stream MCE on event viewer:

7:46:36 AM - Testing internet connection.

    7:46:36 AM - Connection established.

    7:46:37 AM - Retrieving Directory.

7:46:37 AM - Failed to retrieve Directory (Error: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive.)
I have changed my DNS back to original which is autodetect.

I think that the vpn was open and then idle with the shut down occurring.  I do not know if this is a red herring.

can you temporarily uninstall the VPN software completely and see if things
    change?
