I recently 'upgraded' a machine with a new H55 motherboard and Intel i5-660 CPU. It is running Windows Server 2008 R2, with Windows Home Server running in a VM. For a variety of reasons, I ended up re-installing the OS, so it's now a clean install. I haven't resurrected the VM yet, because there is some sort of conflict between Hyper-V and the Intel HD Graphics driver for the graphics embedded in the processor.
Without Hyper-V the graphics driver works fine and without the graphics driver the server works fine. With both in the system, the screen is garbled and the desktop is unusable. Eventually, after many graphics resets, the server crashes with 0x00000116 as the reason. As you might expect, Windows 7 works fine with the graphics driver installed.
If anyone has already posted about this, I apologize. Please refer me to the post.

I'm not sure where I'd get 'an older version of your graphics driver'. Intel doesn't show one on their site and this is the first time I've needed an 'HD graphics' driver' for CPU embedded graphics. Before now it was always embedded in the chipset.
I read KB961661, but I'm not sure it applies to Server 2008 R2. In any case, slow performance is not an issue, non-performance is my problem. I have no choice but to use the generic VGA driver.

Hi,
Have you installed additional drivers for the graphic card? Have you tried to leave it only with the drivers from Windows Server 2008 R2(don’t install additional drivers)?

This is all about whether or not an 'additional driver' is installed for the embedded graphics.
As I said, it works fine if I don't install the Intel HD Graphics driver. In other words, there are no problems when the generic VGA driver is installed.

Hi,
I suspect that there are some compatibility issue with Intel HD Graphics driver and Hyper-V. If you are not concern about the performance of the graphics card(you don’t want to play movie or game on this computer), you can leave it with generic VGA driver.

Hi,
I understand that you may need to perform the daily work on the Hyper-V host computer(I know that some engineers use their laptop for Hyper-V and daily work). However, generally speaking, we don’t recommend that you install accelerated video drivers on Hyper-V host machine, it’s known to cause (sometimes severe) performance issues. As you can see the description in the KB article provided by Bill.
By the way, if you want to perform the further research about the crash, I recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. Because we find it seems to be system crash issue and we need to analyze the crash dump file to narrow down the root cause of the issue. Unfortunately, it is not effective for us to debug the crash dump file here in the forum. Thanks for your understanding.

Hello,
- Notebooks - in my case a Lenovo T410 with Core i7 and nVidia graphics - do not seen to support SLAT.
- Using the standard driver is not an option: Bad resultion and no support for a second monitor.
- On older notebooks with less graphical power it all works fine.
This way, it's just a showstopper for hyper-v.
Example: SharePoint 2010 Demo. SharePoint 2010 needs hyper-v. Should I carry a server-rack to the customers? -

I own a T410s with i5-520. When installing the intel video driver i get a bsod. if i don't install the driver, i cannot use a second monitor and furthermore windows does not realize the native display resolution. so this is not an option.
imho a bsod in this days is not speaking for a stable os. intel and microsoft should work together for a resolution. if we cannot use actual hardware with our favorite os we have to look for working alternatives.

That would be pretty much a waste of time. The product group is well aware of this problem and it bugs them too.

And totally not a waste of time. I have been explicitely told in January to reported it to Microsoft Connect so that it gets a higher rank on their priority list.

I agree, slow is not a problem, BSOD is. It won't even boot. There is a connect thread on this: https://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsServerFeedback/feedback/details/527817/hyper-v-install-blue-screen-video-tdr-failure?wa=wsignin1.0 and it's up to 70 people seing BSODs I'm one of them, lots of different configuration, lots of reason why this is necessary, I have to say I'm a little baffled that BSODs would pass quality testing for a server. Slowness I can live it (it's not supported) but BSODs...
Anyway I hope this gets solved rapidely because I can't do presentations and that means I can't showcase Windows 2008 R2 or other MS products. Being an MVP that's of great importance to me. I will most certainly call support on this and see what they can do.
