Unable to join Core 2008 to a domain
- I am using VMware to have multiple OS's on a single computer, this is for school. I am currently joining a Core Server to a domain set up on my other machine, running Server 2008. The Core machine is freshly created and has not had DNS or active directory activated, and yet my machine says: "This machine is a domain controller and cannot be unjoined from a domain." I do not have any active directory binaries installed on the Core nor DNS as i said. Any suggestions would be very helpful, this is for a class and not crucial, just be nice to get this done.

Hi,
Please run “systeminfo” in a command prompt line on your Server Core computer and paste the whole output here, then we can perform the further research.

Hi,
To be honest, I am a bit confused about your concern.
According to the description, you mentioned that you have add the Server Core computer into a domain, so this Server Core computer is a member server in this domain. You mentioned that “This machine is a domain controller and cannot be unjoined from a domain.” I would like to know what actions did you perform on the Server Core computer? Did you want to un-join the Server Core computer from the domain? To join a computer to a domain and un-join it to a domain is mutually exclusive.

- Sorry, sometimes I word things incorrectly or just weird. What I was trying to do was join the Core Server to a Domain. I found that my problem was incredibly simplistic and it usually is the easy stuff that I miss. What I was trying to do was join the computer serving as the Domain into the Domain itself, which was why it kept telling me that the machine I was trying to join was being used as a controller. The code I was using was: netdom join <computername> /domain:domain /userd:user /passwordd:password. What I was doing was putting the computer name of the server that held the domain and not the computer I was trying to join to the Domain. Sorry for the trouble, nothing like a shower to have an epiphany on how to solve something.
