Lync 2013 system tray icon no longer displays availability status after today's (7/9/13) windows update hotfixes

    Question

  • Lync 2013 system tray icon no longer displays availability status after today's (7/9/13) windows update hotfixes.

Now it just looks like a blue, lync icon.  I want to have it show the statuses again like it did this morning prior to applying the patch Tuesday updates.

It should be green = available, yellow = away, red = dnd/busy, etc.

    I'm running Windows 8 enterprise 64-bit.  Lync client is 2013 (15.0.4517.1004) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-bit.

  • Lync 2013 - Lync icon in system tray no longer displays presence state
After deploying the July 2013 Updates for Lync 2013, you will find that the Lync icon in the system tray has been changed to a static white "L" on a blue background.  Additionally, the system tray icon for Lync 2013 no longer displays presence state, as in previous versions.
This was an intentional change made by the Product Group to synchronize the style of the Lync system tray icon with those from the other Office 2013 suite of products.  However, the Lync Product Group has agreed to reverse their decision and revert the change to the system tray icon in a future cumulative update.

  • Hi JoeDirte,

    1. Can you post the KB of the Windwos Updates that were installed today?

    2. I see that you are currently not running Lync 2013 CU1, can you attempt to upgrade your client as well to see if the problem goes away?

  • I too just ran Windows Updates and have the same problem.  I am unable to see my status in the system tray anymore, it just show the Lync icon picture.  On my other machine that has the same client without having done any updates yet the Lync status is still working correctly.

I'm running Windows 7 - 64Bit Pro with the same client listed above. I did install Security Update for Lync 2013 KB2817465.

  • Hi,

you can uninstall the new update "Security Update for Microsoft Lync 2013(KB2817465)"  to get the stateful icon back, but you'll lose some new features instead, as introduced here,

  • Lync 2013 client CU2 does remove the Status from the System Tray Icon. This was to align the icon with the rest of the Office 2013 apps. You can still change your status for the icon, just not view it.

That's pretty disappointing.  I can understand redesigning the icon to shed the Office Communicator look, but now I have to look for 2 different icons -- the taskbar icon for status, and the tray icon to change status, sign out, etc.  If all the functions on the tray icon were available on the taskbar icon (change status, sign out, etc.), it would be more understandable.  This seems like an unnecessary regression in terms of functionality.

  • If you hover over the system tray icon, a popup will show current status.

  • Thanks for the responses.  I'll look forward to that next client CU which reverts the change to the system tray icon.  Until then, I understand I can uninstall that recent Lync 2013 Client CU2 as a workaround.
