Lync 2010 federation with AOL IM with an evaluation license key?

    Question

  • I have a brand new install of Lync 2010 im evaluating for my company. I have it configured and running with some test users. I would very much like to talk to MSN and AOL IM users using the free MS federation. When I goto the Microsoft site to sign up (https://pic.lync.com/provision/AgreementNumber.aspx), it apparently requires me to have a valid (paid-for) license for Lync. Is there any way to get this to work or will I have to wait for my company to buy the full version?

  • Hi BOFHEN,

Customers with Lync Server 2010 with active Software Assurance (SA) qualify for federation with Windows Live Messenger and AOL without additional licensing requirements.

However, customers that do not meet the qualifying requirements should buy the Lync Public IM Connectivity (PIC) license for federation with Windows Live Messenger and AOL.

For details, see the Public IM Connectivity Provisioning Guide. Hope helps.
