How to use IF statement with Data Validation "list" ?

    Question

  • Hi,

I am trying to do an if statement based on a data validation list.

I have validation list which contains values  Win 2003 and Win 2008

Data validation is set on cell C9 and validation entries are mentioned in the same sheet in cells AA4 and AA5.

I am trying IF statement in cell C10.

What am I trying to achieve is, if I select Win 2003, I should get value 32 and if select Win 2008, I should get value 66 in cell C10.

The following statement in cell C10 is not working.

    IF(C9="WIN 2003",32,66)

Can anyone help me please ?

    Thanks !

  • The formula looks OK.

Make sure that the source values for data validation in AA4:AA5 are correct - perhaps there's a space before or after the values? Or an extra space in between the words?

  • Hello Hans,

Thanks so much for the pointers.

You are correct, Spaces in the Validation entries were causing the issues. I changed them to Win_2003 and Win_2008; and it worked :)

    Thanks again.

    Thanks !
