Outlook 2010 not responding

    Question

  • I have a client with a new windows 7 Pro (64 bit) laptop, running Outlook 2010 on an SBS 2003 network - connecting to Exchange server 2007. This is the only user connecting to the server & she was running Vista with no Outlook issues for 3 years. Since I have installed the new laptop she has had an issue with Outlook "greying out" & it stops responding with the "circle of death" rotating. All other programs remain operational.

    After failing to find the cause I rebuilt the laptop, configured it again & it worked fine for about two weeks before the issue appeared again.

    There are no entries relating to Outlook in the event log & I am certain that the issue is not with the Exchange server as mail still functions in OWA & gets delivered to her phone.

    This is what I have tried,

    Scanpst.exe on the .OST file

    Disabling addins

    Start outlook in safe mode, outlook.exe /restenavpane, Removing Trendmicro

    Creating a new profile

    Reinstalling Office.

    When the issue occurs I try to kill the Outlook.exe process in task manager but receive the following message,

    "Unable to terminate process"

    "The operation could not be completed"

    "Access is denied"

    She does have local Admin privileges!

    I then have to hard reboot the laptop as it never shuts down, & then Outlook works fine - for a while.

    I beleive that there is some issue with Outlook 2010, running on Windows 7, when connecting to a SBS2003 server, as I have a similar issue on another site with over 20 users. The issue is only affecting one user from 20, again a rebuild only resolved the issue for a week or so. I cannot continue rebuilding as a solution.

    Is anyone else suffering from this issue & can you provide a solution?

    Before we go any further, we should narrow down the range of reasons.

    For windows system problem, please do following steps:

     

    1. Download and Install Office 2010 SP1 from the following link first:
    Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 64-bit package.      

    Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 32-bit package.           

    2. Update your anti-virus library, perform a full system scan.
    3. Performing a clean boot in windows to check if any programs conflicts.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

    For outlook problem, please do following steps:
    1. Remove any internet calendar or share folder.
    2. log other user’s mailbox on her laptop, if this issue not exist, Simply create a new mailbox for him and migrate it.

    SP1 is installed, after a clean install there should be no viruses. I will try the clean boot options & get back to you.

  • Hi Tony,

    I had to be sure & it has now been 3 days with no issues since disabling half of the non MS services. I have yet to identify which service but I am reasonibly confident that the issue has been resolved.
