Outlook's taskbar icon occassionally shows as powerpoint

    Question

  • I have upgraded by Office from 2007 to 2010 RTM - MSDN version.  I have noticed that on the odd occassion the taskbar icon for Outlook changes to Powerpoint.

If I hover over the icon, it shows "Inbox - Mailbox - {My Name} - Microsoft Outlook"
If I right click on the icon then I see the following items in the pop-up menu ( from top to bottom )

    "New Email Message"
    "New Appointment"
    "New Meeting"
    "New Contact"
    "New Task"

    "Microsoft Powerpoint 2010"
"Pin the program to the taskbar"
    "Close Window"

If I then start powerpoint then the taskbar icons "stack" instead of side by side.

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2, with Themes service running - In otherwords it looks like Windows 7.  My taskbar is also set to small icons, but it still shows the pointpoint icon if I switch to large icons.

  • That's very strange. Try to create a new Outlook profile to test if the problem occurs. You can create a new Outlook profile by this: Click Start, in the Search box, type mail and press Enter. Click Show Profiles, and follow the onscreen instructions to create a new Outlook profile.

Clean install of Office 2010 x64 Professional has PowerPoint showing up as the Outlook icon 5 times out of 10 so definitely a problem. I have roaming profiles FYI.

  • I have excatly the same issue. Server 2008 R2 with Desktop Experience, themes etc. with Office 2010 Pro Plus (32 bit). Outlook Taskbar icon shows as PowerPoint exactly as described by Rob.

I deleted the iconcache.db file at C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local and restarted, but the first time I opened Outlook it presented the PowerPoint taskbar icon.

Doesn't seem to have any effect on functionality, just odd.

  • Also having this problem with 2008 R2 with desktop experience using Office 2003 Professional (32Bit)

We've also noticed that the Word icon changes to the certificates icon some times.

Not a major problem but it is confusing users.

  • We have the same issue. Does anyone have a resolution?

We are running Office 2007 SP2 with 2008R2 and Citrix XenApp 6.

    Wednesday, June 09, 2010 1:34 AM
  • Nope, still having the problem here.

The only common thing between us all is 2008 R2. Seems we are using different TS software and Office versions.

FYI, we are also using 3 hosts with a connection broker.

    Any ideas?

    Saturday, July 10, 2010 3:11 AM

Something definitely weird going on here!

Anyone from Microsoft able to advise?

    1. This is only happening on Windows 2008 R2 (Std or Ent Editions)

    2. This is happening over RDP and ICA sessions, regardless

    3. This is happening to Office 2010 (x64), Office 2007, and Office 2003 suites.

  • Can you guys confirm one thing: Are your icons on the task bar set to group together, group when full, or never group? Can you try all three different settings and let me know your results? My PSS ticket has been passed to the Windows Team, then the Office team, and now to the Windows Core team - typical.

    Thanks.

    Same issue here
    Wednesday, July 28, 2010 12:08 PM
  • So I've been working with Microsoft, removing any GPOs, startup services and registry settings, using a local profile, and we're still getting the issue. We're now performing an 'msdt' to upload all the relevant information to Microsoft for investigation. I told them I'm available to work on this 24/7 and I will be on them until we get this sorted so hang in there guys, we're working on it this very second....

Have also noticed Visio icon shows as Word sometimes. Word shows as a certificate icon. Using group taskbars and roaming profiles.

  • Guys,

I am now back in dialogue with Microsoft again, he's asked me a few questions, wants a ProcMon sample, so I'll get those over to him and let you guys know the results. I've also asked him if I can get you guys involved with the testing too.... Please do the following to help me and dude out:

    - Download and extract the Process Monitor utility from:

       - Run procmon.exe.

         - Stop and clear the current log in the application.

           - Stop the current logging by clicking on the magnifying glass button.

           - Clear the current log by clicking on the eraser button.

       - Start the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.

       - Reproduce the menu symptom.

       - Stop the capturing for PROCMON by clicking on the magnifying glass button

     - Choose SAVE AS from the FILE menu to save the resulting log to zip

Email me the Zip file and I'll forward it to him. If he has more than my sample to work from, he might be able to easily spot the issue.

  • I've been trying to do it for you Steve but unfortunately the problem has mysteriously disappeared for us. I have a few users looking into it but I can't replicate it at the moment. The only thing I can think of is recent Windows update but even again, there was nothing notable.

  • We are running same OS as the original post (so same OS as OP !)

I had the icon swap all week, now gone, session still open but closed both apps, and my colleage in the next cell (er booth) also has the icon swap.

Quite funny for an hour or two, but gets on your wick after a few days. Task bar set to Always combine, hide labels.

  • We too had the same issue with Outlook 2010 showing the Powerpoint icon in the taskbar.  However this only happened on the first launch of Outlook in an RDS/XenApp Desktop session.  Once the app was closed and reopened the icon showed the correct Outlook icon.  That is until you logged out and back in again and the Powerpoint icon came back for the initial launch of the app.

While only partially related, the following Microsoft hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2259539) worked for us.  After applying the hotfix and rebooting, on first launch Outlook initially showed the Powerpoint icon but it switched back to the Outlook one midway through the Outlook loading splashscreen.  Thereafter even on a new logon only the Outlook icon displays correctly (so far).

    Hope this helps,

    Azza

procmon.exe is not found on my pc

I have closed and reopened Outlook and the icon is fine now and has not reverted back.

Steve, I have a procmon log but I don't have your email address? Could you post it?

Has anyone else had any success with fixing this? Whilst it's not a "show stopper", it's a mild annoyance for me :)

  • I accidently hit "Propose As Answer" on the above post.   How do I undo that??

    Wednesday, December 01, 2010 8:29 PM
  • I am also having this same issue.  If I also open PowerPoint, it gets grouped together with the Outlook items.  If I close out Outlook and reopen, it fixes it (as described by others) and gets grouped seperately from PowerPoint.  I tried the KB225939 "fix" but it did not fix the problem (even after reboot.)

The Task Manager shows the correct icon for Outlook as well as doing an Alt+Tab.

HOWEVER, if I pin Outlook to the Taskbar (from the start menu) it fixed the issue for me!

Now to figure out how to set that in the Default profile...

    • 2008 R2 RDS
    • Outlook 2007 (also did it with Outlook 2003 but it was a certificate)
    • Aero

  •  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2259539 is not supposed to fix this issue.

The product team is aware of this issue and is working towards an internal repro and a possible fix.
Though no release date has been decided yet, it may get fixed for the next service pack, or may get released as a hotfix.

  • Can anyone comment if the latest Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit SP1 resolved this issue?

We are experiencing the same thing on a Win2008R264-bit Terminal Server running Citrix XenApp 6 and Office 2010 32-bit and 64-bit (different servers running different office versions - same icon issue).

We are not quite ready to deploy SP1 - so we can't verify that it fixes this issue.  Anyone who has deployed have any results?

    Thanks!
