  • Just asked a specialist, it's supposed to be released in 2011 - I'm not sure when.

Do we have an ETA on a MICROSOFT release of a mobile Lync client, and not a 3rd party.? This should have been something MS launched with Lync, the features are fantastic with Lync we use it here at our office, but where all mobile so doesent help our mobile users any! :(

  • For Windows Phone 7, it will be part of the 'Mango' / 7.5 update out later this year.

  • My impression is that Lync Client wil be in a own app late fall 2011. Still, my impression... WP7 is consumer first, enterprise later...

Pity indeed, but it is a success on iPhone...  :-)

Microsoft has confirmed Lync Mobile Client in the Mango Release at TechEd

  • god damn it!

It looks like we are going to get a skype (which is "new" to MS) client and front facing camera's before Lync. (mid Oct is the mp7 skype client)

Hurry the hell up MS. I made everyone in the company switch to wp7 because of lync and.. no client yet :P for a year! (-ish) :)

  • OK, Mango has been released, update on my phone is finished - so far, no sign of a lync client either on the phone or in market place - am I overlooking something?

Here is a little update that was given about lync and windows phone:
    http://windowspbx.blogspot.com/2011/09/its-official-microsoft-releasing-lync.html

The lync client for windowsphone wasn't specifically promised exactly on mango release date but in the Mango timeframe. According to article above msft said it would be "several weeks". ;-) 3 weeks? 10 weeks? We'll see. Anytime between now and end of year I suppose.

If this is helpful, vote as helpful. ;-)

  • Nope, your not missing anything it's not on the market place, I don't believe anyone said it would release at the same time as mango though, there is quite a bit of chatter about it being released soon though.

    latest I've read is below.

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/microsoft_news/231601937?cid=InformationWeek-Twitter

    some time this year.

Frustraiting as we moved to OCS r2 natively and we were using OCS mobile on win mobile 6* devices

Then MS released wp7 we migrated straight to wp7 expecing a mobile client, it never happened which is very frustraiting.

Months on and we are still waiting for a client, i dont understand why its not even available as a beta or anything :(

Not great from an enterprise point of view.

  • Well, David, are you aware of the LP Lync client for Windows Phone? this is 3rd party and requires Ucma backend, but it does largely what the official app does. Maybe that would be an interim client?

    See it here:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/cs2010/archive/2011/04/24/lync-mobile-lp-client-and-lp-server-software-released.aspx

but now we are within weeks/month?...of official Lync client.

    good weekend,

  • November is now more than half over . . . Will we still see Lync for Windows Phone available this month? Not having Lync on Windows Phone is really a challenge for enterprise users.

  • This has been available on the iphone for some time,

I love my WP 7, but this needs to be delivered soon.

  • Firstly thanks for the "install a third party solutions" answers, we are a MS shop and we really shouldn't be forced into using something else untill MS get themselves sorted out.

It still baffles me that there appears to be no commitment from MS to Lync Mobile. Why? Why so secretive? What's the gain?

At the moment all they are doing is winding up the people who stand up in front of managers / snr managers and board members trying to justify direction.

    So frustrating.

Even more so when you read some of the info out there, Lync mobile was waiting for WP7.5 (Mango) and later find out that it will run on WP7 (nodo)! I really hope they get themselves sorted soon.

  • David,

First of all, I am not Microsoft. ;-) (just to ward off any sticks and stones that immediately head my way...;-)

But, Microsoft is communicating that Lync Mobile will be here by "end of calendar year 2011".

Below are the most authoritative sources I could gather on the subject of Lync Mobile. I've done this to try to help those who need to answer to others... Bear in mind that some of these articles are written a bit "sloppy" (i'm pointing directly at you, InformationWeek ;-)

    http://windowspbx.blogspot.com/2011/11/microsoft-lync-mobile-client-history.html

You can bookmark this page because i will update as any more information becomes available.

ps- remember that, as always, what is actually delivered can always mutate from what a company wanted to deliver.

  • David,

Also, some things to take to those people who are asking questions:

Basically my point is that if most of us got the painful choice "have people very excited about Lync and therefore begging for Lync mobile" or "have people not wanting Lync therefore not caring about Lync Mobile" we'd all take the first option too i suspect.

Obviously the most ideal is to "have cake and eat it too" and we are on the last stretch till this is the case too. ;-)

  • Hi Matt
Thanks for the replies, do appreciate your time.
At the end of the day we lost functionality we were using, and it's coming.... doesn't quite help :(

    Some more questions though...
When released will it be available immediately on the market place or does it need approval before it's available?
Will it talk to a 2007 r2 edge server and backend?
Or will it only play with full Lync deployments?

p.s. I'm still hoping that someone will send me a link to get a version we can test before it does get released, then I will be able to answer my own questions... :)

    Thanks again
    David.

  • David,

As much as I'd like to help there, I'll have to defer those details to Microsoft to answer.
