Printing labels in microsoft word mail merge

    Question

  • I have been trying for nearly 12 months to print labels, Using Microsoft word, Mailing, Mail Merge, step by step merge wizard.   I have not problem until I try printing.   The labels do print but are not within the label stickers.   I use L7160.   I have a Dell printer and laptop.  I would appreciate any help.

  • 1. You have added a header/footer to the normal template rename normal.dot(m).
    2. The page size set in the printer properties doesn't match the page size of the label sheet.
    3. You have a scaling option set in the zoom section of the print dialog
    4. Your printer has poor paper handling. Some printers will slip when faced with label stock and thus are incapable of feeding the label correctly. Cleaning the rollers in the print path may help.

As for the merge see http://www.gmayor.com/mail_merge_labels_with_word_xp.htm or http://www.gmayor.com/merge_labels_with_word_2007.htm

  • I have the same problem.  Using L7160 labels and they look fine on screen, i.e. fit in the boxes but do not print correctly.  How do you change the normal.dot layout?

  • Hi

The only way, after much seeking and IT help I must say not from Microsoft.   I have at last been able to print labels by using mail merge wizard and when you get to print, go back to edit individual labels.  You are then on word and can make the addresses fit the labels.   I take the first two lines down 1 space then the next down 2 spaces and then I just make the rest fir the squares on the screen.   Unfortunately this quit a pain but worth the effort.   I also had to move the 3rd column of labels address by address to 14 on the ruler.  I have now saved all my address labels on word document so I can print as and when I require them.   It was well worth the effort but I really think microsoft should get the problem sorted.  All they seem to say is the printer is the problem.   They should get their IT experts sort the 2007 Mail Merge out. Ha Ha !!

  • None of what you say is necessary if you set up the labels properly in the first place and do not have any of the items that Graham mentioned.

    Hope this helps.
