"The operation failed" msg when sending email with Outlook 2007

    Question

  • From time to time some users (but not all users) press the send button of Outlook 2007 and get an error msg "The operation failed". It's a new email just created, not a reply. The work around is to save the email, reopen it from the Draft folder and resend it. But it doesn't work all time. Sometime, we need to restard Outlook to be able to send the email. No event log msg.

There are two different configurations on client side :

    1- Outlook 2007 (12.0.6607.1000) SP3 on Windows XP SP3

     2- Outlook 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) on Windows 7 SP1

    The Exchange server is a 2007 SP3 with rollup 1, 2, 3 and 4 installed

    Any advise?

  • I can't have access to the computer because the user is too busy. I'll try your suggestion when I can and put that thread as answer. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi,

    1. Please confirm if you are running in File > Work Offline mode.
    2. Please test the result in account online mode (uncheck “Use Cached Exchange Mode” in Account setting)
    3. Please go to Account setting > select your account > More settings > Security > Encryption to check the option “Encrypt data between Microsoft and Microsoft Exchange” and see the result.

If the issue still persists, please also create a new profile follow the article below to test it in one client:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918
Note: A new profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. To create a new profile is only for a test to see if the problem is related to the corrupt profile of Outlook. Creating new profile will not do any damage to the old profile.

If the problem does not exist in the new profile, you can refer to the import and export section in following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to move your data in the old profile to the new profile.

One more question, do you send this mail to an personal mailbox or to a contact group? If you only occur the issue when you send mails to contact group, please check the members in this group is setting correctly.

    Feel free to post back.

  • Hi,

Number 2. was the issue. When I uncheck "Use Exchange Mode" the issue resolved themself. Now, how could I fix it because working without that function could be painfull if the network isn't reliable (mostly when they are connected wireless).

    Thank for your help.
