All Office programs go through "software reinstallation process" every time I open them.

    Question

  • I saw a link in the office 2010 beta section but am experiencing the same problem in the full release version.

The office 2010 beta postings are

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/office2010/thread/59de3bad-f78b-4b9f-9820-bc3af4461f62

Office 2010 Never Saves Installation Configuration

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-GB/office2010/thread/17ab9480-8d33-4efb-9298-ac54d86413ab

It appears that the ms installer is still broken.  Uninstall, cleanup and reinstall of office 2010 yeild identical results.

My installation is on w2k8 r1 server x64.  I had office 2007 installed and working perfectly.  Upgraded to office 2010 x86, install crashed with error 1402 after corrupting a bunch of registry permissions.  I then did a manual uninstall and cleanup of 2007 & 2010, and the 2010 install ran without error.

Now each time I launch an office application (all of them), the installer starts up and goes into a "please wait while windows configures office professional plus 2010".  With visio it takes over 2 minutes to launch.  Other applications have a 15-30 second delay each time I start them.

Oddly enough, when I double-click the .exe file in the installation directory (excel.exe, winword.exe, outlook.exe, etc), they all launch cleanly without the stupid error messages.  I have all sorts of info from the event logs if somebody from Microsoft contacts me.

    Thanks.

  • I did a 2007 to 2010 upgrade and it finished with no errors, however I get the same message on any program I start

Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010

I manually changed a lot of entries in the registry from office12 to office14 and that sped up some of the wait time, but it still does it. I used the Microsoft install clean tools and cleaned the registry manually and automatically. reinstalled and still does it.

I can start without a problem by starting exe in the program file directory like you describe.

Also I can drag the file from the program directory and create a shortcut on the desktop and it works flawlessly - no install message.

Someone look at the properties in each shortcut and permissions. One works and one doesn't. I do not know enough to know what to change but the answer might be there.  At least you will be able to manually start them without hassle, but need to associate with .doc file to have it invoke the same starting properties by default. not sure where to do that.

I am at the same place and very frustrated.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Thank you for using  Office 2010 Setup and Deployment forum.

From your description, I understand that when trying to open any Office 2010 program, it tries to install again with the following message: Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

First, I suggest trying to start the Office program by this method:

Please go to the path where your Office programs are installed. Normally, it is installed in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14. Locate the Word.exe file, or Excel.exe file or others, click to start.

Can we start the program properly by this way?

If we can start the program properly by this way, this issue occurs as the shortcuts for the Office program are corrupted. Please let me know where you click to start the Office program, from a desktop shortcut, from Start menu Most Recently Used (MRU) list, or from Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office, or others?

If you click from Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office, please right click on the program, such as Microsoft Word, and choose Properties. Click the General tab, and check if the path is right (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14).

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

  • Sally

I can start the programs like winword flawlessly in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE by navigating to the directory in an explorer window by double clicking on the icon in the directory.

I can drag the icon from that directory onto my desktop and create a shortcut and by clicking on that shortcut - it starts flawlessly.

From my start menu shortcuts it has the startup delay problem and goes through the configuration process.

When in outlook - if I click on an attachment doc file, it goes through the configuration process.

I have used word as an example above but all office 2010 icons act in the same manner as the winword example above. And all attachments when clicked on start their program but it has the startup problem.

Now to specificaly answer your question about the properties in the different shortcuts. I will use winword as an example but they all (powerpoint, excel etc) have the same characteristics.

Here are the differences and similarities I can see. on shortcut tab... I think the problem is indicated by these field differences (The general tab has a path where the shortcut is and one is on my desktop and works (This is the one I created by dragging from the file directory and the other has a path that says its shortcut is on the start menu. No surprise there and has nothing to do with the problem.)

    1. For the shortcuts dragged from th start menu ( the ones causing the problem). Target Location Field : It is blank and cannot be edited.

For the working shortcut - dragged from the office directory - target location Field is filled in and says "Office14". It cannot be edited. It is not grayed out.

    2. For the shortcuts dragged from the start menu ( the ones causing the problem) - target field is grayed out  and cannot be edited but it reads "Microsoft office professional 2010"

on the good shortcut it is editable and reads "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE"

    3. For the shortcuts dragged from the start menu- Start in is editable and reads "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14"

Working shortcut - Start in is editable and reads "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14" So there is no difference in these fields for the different shortcuts.

  • I have been able to get all but word working from both type of icons as referenced above.  The only difference in the shortcuts now is the word one on the start menu (which makes me wait) has nothing in the Target Location Field : It is blank and cannot be edited.

For the working word shortcut - dragged from the office directory - target location Field is filled in and says "Office14". It cannot be edited. It is not grayed out.

All the other office programs have office 14 in both shortcut types and both now work from both places.

However Powerpoint, word, and excel still have problem when I try to open a file or an attachment. does the please wait message and I wait.

Publisher will open a .pub file without a problem.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled word and it did me no good.  After the uninstall I looked at the registry and it still had winword associated with a lot of file types. This association was not removed when the program was uninstalled and remains the same after installation. Could that be the crux of the problem?

    Any suggestions?

    Jim

  • I fixed the icon problems on the startup menu. Copied the good one and replaced it in startup directory.

Now only problem is clicking on an attachment in an email or in a directory.

Below are the events from event handler that occur when I click on a .doc file and get the please wait error. This is what it is trying to do while I wait. Eventually it does open word and the file. (same is true for .ppt and .xls. Publisher files don’t have a problem and open immediately.

  • Tami> "Please go to the path where your Office programs are installed. Normally, it is installed in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14. Locate the Word.exe file, or Excel.exe file or others, click to start.   Can we start the program properly by this way?"

Yes, Tami, this works just fine for all the ms office programs.

Launching all ms office programs from the original installation links causes the msiInstaller to launch for 30-60 seconds.

Creating custom shortcuts for each of the .exe files (from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\*.exe" works just fine.

When launching the following apps via file assocation (ie. double-clicking the .xls, .xlsx, .doc, .docx, .ppt from ms explorer, the "broken" msiInstaller event occurs, all sorts of application event log entries are recorded, and I have to wait 30-60 seconds before the application is launched:

    - excel
    - word
    - powerpoint

The following 2 applications work just fine when launched via file association, so they both work "properly":

    - visio
    - access

When visio and access are launched, only 3 informational events are logged in the application log, all related to verifying that the software is legally licensed.  The same occurs when excel, word, and powerpoint are launched from my new custom shortcuts or directly from the .exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\.

When file associations are used to launch excel, word or powerpoint, 11 application event log entries are recorded, with the first 2 warnings always containing

The resource 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.odt\PersistentHandler\' does not exist.
Detection of product '{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature 'WORDFiles', component '{8520C5B0-1698-48FC-8298-C089B0F9D30D}' failed.  The resource 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.odt\PersistentHandler\' does not exist.

Detection of product '{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature 'EXCELFiles', component '{8520C5B0-1698-48FC-8298-C089B0F9D30D}' failed.  The resource 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.odt\PersistentHandler\' does not exist.

I went to that registry entry, and discovered that the permissions had been mis-configured by the installer, and were set with "special permissions" for the users system and msiserver, and there were no inherited permissions.  I also got an "access denied" when I tried to expand the classes .odp, ods & .odt.  I then when through each key and subkey, set owner to administrators, then set them to inherit permissions.

This had do to be done manually for each key and subkey since forcing inheritable permissions down to the subkeys didn't work until I set the owner to administrators.  All those keys had "msiserver" as a user, and were missing all the other inheritable permissions from hklm/software/classes.

Deleted the key persistenthandler, and word startup recreated it with the value

      default - reg_sz - {34CEAC8D-CBC0-4f77-B7B1-8A60CB6DA0F7}

Deteleted the key persistenthandler, and excel startup recreated it with the (same) value

      default - reg_sz - {34CEAC8D-CBC0-4f77-B7B1-8A60CB6DA0F7}

I checked the key permissions and they were good, not the old corrupt ones I fixed.

Starting word & excel up a 2nd time resulted in the same windows installer running garbage.

Here is an export of the registry key in question:
    ----------------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.odt]
    "PerceivedType"="document"
    "Content Type"="application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text"

    @="{84F66100-FF7C-4fb4-B0C0-02CD7FB668FE}"
    ----------------------------------

I have no idea how to proceed from here.  This is apparently a bug with the msinstaller service/software.

Would you please escalate this so we can get a fix?

    Thanks.

Then repeats 1001 and 1004 events several times

Then several information items as well.  I have saved an evtx file with all events on startup attempt. May I send it to you?

I am having the same problem and am getting HIGHLY annoyed at this point.  I uninstalled Office 2010 Beta and installed Office 2010 Professional Plus purchased through Microsoft HUP and none of the Office programs will run without the Installer and configuration.  This same error in in my event log.  Is there a fix for this?
