How to create a Template in Microsoft Visio 2007

    질문

  • Hi,

I am trying to create a Custom Template in Visio 2007

Unfortunately, I am stuck. I have no idea how to go about it.

Google isn't much help.  I found this link online : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294245

But, that only provides a description based on an already-existing template

How do I create a new Custom Template?

    Thanks

  • You've always got to start from somewhere (unless you want to write your own raw XML!!!!!) so use the blank diagram as a starting point then modify it how you want.

    Thanks Paul

That's what I meant exactly. How do I create a TEMPLATE from a blank diagram??

I may be wrong, but just placing a few stencils and flow objects on a blank sheet of "paper", and then storing it as a "template", is not exactly the way to go.

But please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you could give me a step by step rundown of what to do, I'd be very grateful

    Thanks

Why not? That is what a template is.

  • to add to Paul's comments you might consider this

a shorter answer is that there is no basic difference between a vss, vst, and vsd file; merely in how Visio operates against them. That's why you create a stencil (and template) as a drawing and then save it with a VST suffix.

  • Hi Paul and Al,

I thank you both for your replies.

It would seem that I originally misunderstood what a "Template" really is.

My intention was : to create something that, when opened in VISIO, would emerge exactly as a "Drawing Table" ---- in other words :  a blank sheet on the right, and a list of stencils (shapes and diagrams) on the left.  These stencils would contain ONLY those shapes which I myself selected from the list of shapes provided by MS VISIO.

This is what I thought a "Template" was.  I was seeking a way to list only those stencils I needed on the left-side.

Apparently, this is impossible.........without actually modifying the MS VISIO source code  :))))))))

  • It really is quite simple, a 5 minute job. Exactly as the quoted article says.

Just create a blank drawing, open the stenicls you want, then do a Save As, select Template as the save type, enter your template name, set the save location, click the small arrow to the right of the save button and ensure Workspace is ticked, then save. Now always use that template when you want to start your new drawing. Make a shortcut to the template on your desktop. Adding the templae to the list of templates in Visio is more difficult, but get this step done first then we can deal with the next bit later.

The small arrow to the right of the "Save" button shows only two options :  SAVE  and READ-ONLY.

If I've understood correctly : I cannot determine my own stencils. Correct?  I can only choose from those provided by Visio  (on the left-hand side) ??

To put this another way : can I create my own STENCIL FILE  (which could contain a list of shapes which I will pick from various other stencil files in Visio) ?

  • Ah, of course, in Visio 2007 the workspace control moved to File -> Properties -> Save Workspace.

You can determine your own stencils. You can choose any stencils.

    Yes.

    Oh, good!

Then please, tell me how to do that :=)))    How to create my own Stencil File ?

I guess this comes closest to what I've been looking for.  A workspace, with my own stencil file

    Thanks again
