metadirectory and metaverse

    Pergunta

  • Members,

I am new to FIM and learning it now.

Currently going through training material at ‘http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/ff793470.aspx’.

What is the difference between metadirectory and metaverse?

Kindly ignore the ignorance and share your thoughts J

    Thanks,

    Mann

  • That's a very old school article!

Long answer short: A metadirectory is a system that enables data transfer between systems. In FIM, the Metaverse is where the data is stored as it is transported.

In the FIM world, the Metaverse is often just called the metadirectory.

  • This might be a bit nitpicky - a directory is a layer on a database that is supposed to improve read / lookup operations by organizing the data based on a hierachy.
The hierachy creates little data islands.
When the scope of a search is just one of theese data island, the operation must be faster than a search that has the entire dataset as scope.

The metaversere namespace is flat - it is "just" a database.
So, from a technical perspective, calling the metaverse a metadirectory is not really correct.

I like the "system that enables data transfer between systems" a lot.

    Cheers,

  • "system that enables data transfer between system"

To me above line sound like definition of 'FIM Synchronization Service'?

What is the difference between a metadirectory and FIM Synchronization Service?

  • I would describe the FIM Synchronization Service as a Meta Directory. I would describe the Metaverse as the heart of said Meta Directory where you get a composite view of the data from your various directories. My understanding is that FIM's original ancestor, VIA from ZOOMIT, was the original Meta Directory product.

  • for FIM!

I personally feel a confusion between metaverse and metadirectory when I read documents.

Ross and David's explanation helped a lot.

In short metadirectory in FIM= Connector Space + Management Agent + Metaverse

  • I think you have it with one slight tweak:

In short metadirectory in FIM Synchronization Service = Connector Space + Management Agent + Metaverse

    Happy Fimming!
