I am new to FIM and learning it now.
Currently going through training material at ‘http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/ff793470.aspx’.
What is the difference between metadirectory and metaverse?
Kindly ignore the ignorance and share your thoughts J

Perhaps a stroll down memory lane will help ;)
That's a very old school article!
Long answer short: A metadirectory is a system that enables data transfer between systems. In FIM, the Metaverse is where the data is stored as it is transported.
In the FIM world, the Metaverse is often just called the metadirectory.

This might be a bit nitpicky - a directory is a layer on a database that is supposed to improve read / lookup operations by organizing the data based on a hierachy.
The hierachy creates little data islands.
When the scope of a search is just one of theese data island, the operation must be faster than a search that has the entire dataset as scope.
The metaversere namespace is flat - it is "just" a database.
So, from a technical perspective, calling the metaverse a metadirectory is not really correct.
I like the "system that enables data transfer between systems" a lot.
