FIM 2010 R2 User provisioning and sending of password via SMS

    Pergunta

  • Hi,

We are planning to do full user provisioning with FIM 2010 R2 and send the password via SMS to the user's mobile phone registered on the HR system.  We are currently doing provisioning, but only part of it, the service desk completes the commissioning of new users.  We want to reduce the service desk involvement in the provisioning process.

I was thinking that it should be possible similar to how the OTP via SMS works for SSPR.  Can this WF activity be used for this? or would one need to write a new WF activity for this? Or better yet, is there already a WF activity which will do this?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

  • OTP via SMS by default is not implementing a way to send a password - it is giving you interface to do this and you need to implement class which will execute actual SMS delivery. So if you will have to do this in the same way you can implement a w-flow activity which will do this directly. Or just use e-mail activity if you have Mail-2-SMS gateway

  • Tomasz,

Thanks. The answer is not really what I wanted to hear, but was expecting something like this :-).  I have written a WF activity before to provide date and time in the FIM portal and struggled a lot.  So I am not very keen on doing it.

    Thanks again

  • Hi,

Update on this.  I wrote a WF activity to send a message directly via SMS.  I did this by using VB in Visual Studio 2010. The WFA takes two WF parameters which needs to be predefined, one for the message the other for the number.

I use the webclient to connect to the SMS gateway and deliver the SMS message.  It can connect either via http or https. We plan to use this to send passwords as well as other messages to mobile phone e.g. when your password is about to expire.

It was actually easier that I thought. :-)

  • Glad you got this working. Don't forget to think about handling transient errors/connectivity issues/etc. Something like this is bound to run in to this type of thing from time to time. Fortunately the WF engine is very adept at sleeping and retrying if you tell it to.

    Thanks, Brian
