Is server publishing in TMG considered to be reverse proxy?

Hi,
I was wondering if I use the server publishing rules in TMG 2010 is it considered a reverse proxy as with web publishing rules or is it the same as allowing access to the servers through my main firewall?

Hi,
if you are using Server Publishing rules for HTTP/HTTPS you only have a kind of Port Forwarding. ISA Server accepts the traffic and forwards it to the internal webserver:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb794758.aspx
Web Server Publishing allows you more functionality like URL Inspection / HTTP Filtering, restricting access to only allowed users and many more. So you have to decide which functionality you need. Typically, webservers are published through ISA/TMG with the help of Webserver publishing rules.

The Server Publishing is for a inhouse application (not Http/s).
Basically I want to know if the TMG server will break the connection and recreate it (like a reverse proxy) or just let the client pass throught directly to the internal server?

Hi,
it is only a kind of Port Forwarding:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb794758.aspx
http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/ISA-2006-Firewall-Web-Publishing-Rules.html
The request from the client goes to the ISA Server which forwards the request to the internal published server. Depending on the Application Filter used in ISA Server 2006 the request will be transparently forwarded or goes to filtering (like the SMTP filter in ISA/TMG when you publish an SMTP Server).
So the answer of your question is, that the client doesn't talk directly with the published server.
HTH
