Very good question. I've got exactly the same problem. Just 5 users who use Exchange Online and lots of information for things the probably won't even be necessary for this issue.
Would be nice if someone knows what to do in this case.

The transition of any license is the same. In O365, you will have Exchange only licenses as well.
Do you have any specific questions on the transition process that isn't outlined in the transition checklist?

If it wasn't difficult, it wouldn't be fun, but why's it got to be this much fun. -

If it wasn't difficult, it wouldn't be fun, but why's it got to be this much fun.Actually - the checklist referenced above is almost useless for someone using ONLY Exchange as it includes references to all kinds of steps and changes that are NOT required for Exchange only users and mostly are gibberish to anyone who is not an experienced SysAdmin!
Our account is scheduled to be transitioned this weekend and here is what I have been told is needed for Exchange only transition:
1) User's must change their passwords in BPOS. (They can use the Online Service Sign-in tool to to this)
2) AFTER the transition - they should sign in to the new O365 portal (https://portal.microsoftonline.com) and
a) click the "Download" link on the right
b) then click the "Setup" button to configure Outlook to connect directly to O3653) After Outlook is reconfigured you can uninstall the sign in tool as it is not supposed to be needed any longer (the one good thing in all this!)
4) After the transition, update your DNS record for new autodiscover, MX records, etc.
Good luck all!

Hi!
I have one dude about the steps. You tell in step 3 Outlook is reconfigured and in step 4, update your DNS records (autodiscover) for Office365.
It's correct?? I think that you need first change autodiscover DNS records to automatically Outlook gets the correct mailbox change.
And I think that you first must uninstall sing-in and then users logon to new Office365 Portal, get the software to desktop ready ...
Sorry for this dudes, I don't make any transition and all people think has lots of dudes!! right??
I would do:
0) User's must change their passwords in BPOS with the Sing-in tool
1) While the transition, or after the transition or I don't know when because I have the dude if users while transition can access their Outlooks, change the Autodiscover DNS records
2) Users should uninstall Communicator & Sing-in utility
3) After transition, users should login in the portal and do the same at your step number 2 (download, click setup.. cross fingers..).
4) And magically (teory) users open their outlooks and all works fine......
Anybody has completed any transition?? would be more specific with all the steps???

Beware the tool isn't going to configure Outlook, as the Sign On tool from BPOS did.
Outlook is configured by it's own wizard using autodiscovery, if DNS is updated.
I have setup alot of Outlooks without installing that tool, with no problem at all.

OK, let me clarify some things as there is not a lot of documentation on the process to expect.1) Passwords must be changed prior to the transition so that the new passwords are synced to O365. Usually this is recommended the last 2 weeks before the transition to provide the longest period after transitioning to O365.
2) Users need to run the Office 365 Setup tool in order to make sure all patches are applied (manual patch deployment is allowed as well as long as the Office 365 Sign-in assistant is installed as well). This should be done prior to transition as it will allow them to perform this at their own leisure.
3) DNS records need to be changed DURING the transition weekend or immediately afterwards depending on the time it takes your local and global DNS records to propagate (hopefully you are experienced with your DNS hoster).
4) The Sign-in client for BPOS will detect, once transition is complete, that your user no longer has a mailbox on BPOS and will disable itself and remove the registry keys for Outlook pointing to the XML file (do not remove the SSO client until after this process unless you want to push a GPO that removes the registry keys yourself). The SSO client can then be removed at any time after this.
5) Once your users are transitioned, have them run the Office 365 setup tool again and it will help configure their applications. Outlook will indicate it needs further action which will be to enter in the user's name/email address and autodiscover (assuming you have configured the DNS record already) will pick this up automatically and the user will only have to enter in their password (ADFS is not available up to a week after transtion so users will need to either enter their credentials, for Outlook, or have to use OWA if this is not preferable).
6) Users will need to configure their mobile devices at this point as well to connect to O365 and autodiscover, assuming the device supports it, will help the configuration part as well.
You will be locked out of the Admin Center (https://portal.microsoftonline.com) until the transition is complete and users will be unable to SEND email until this is complete as well (but will be able to receive it). Mail is not lost during this process, it is synced from BPOS to O365 daily during the last 2 weeks and the final stage will be a delta sync of what was received over the weekend.
Please let me know if you need anything further clarified about the process.
