WSUS remote admin console for 2012

    Pergunta

  • With WSUS 3.x, I had a remote console installed on an XP box so that I could use the Local Update Publisher.  For 3.x that wasn't a necessity because it could also run on the WSUS server.  For 2012 it will be required because LUP doesn't run on 64-bit servers.  Now my problem is that I can't find the updated console to put on the XP box.  Is one available?  Alternatively I could install it on a Windows 7 32-bit box.

  • Unfortunately LUP isn't ready to publish updates to Server 2012 based WSUS installations as the product does not currently run on 64-bit OS, which is currently the only OS you can currently run the 6.2 WSUS console on. It does, however, seem that WSUS Package Publisher does work on 2012 and 2012R2.

It won't work on a Windows 7 32-bit box either, because there is no WSUS v6 console available for Windows 7.

The only way you can currently make this work is to install a Windows 8.1 x86 (32-bit) system, install the RSAT (which gives you the WSUS v6 console), and then run LUP.

The pending question is whether LUP is supported on Windows 8.1 (or Windows 8.0).

  • The marked answer solved the problem in its entirety.  According to the answer, the WSUS 6.x console won't run on 32-bit - is that incorrect?  The availability of WSUS Package Publisher eliminates the need for a remote console anyway.    LUP's developer hasn't moved on porting it to 64-bit so any further usefulness for that product appears to be limited.  It will run on Windows 8, 32-bit, but that doesn't appear to matter.

That is incorrect. The WSUS 6.x console is available via the Windows 8 x86 RSAT package. So, even though LUP may be 32-bit only, you could run it on Windows 8 x86.

Well.. yes and no. When used with WSUS v3.2 you must install the full console. When used with WSUS v6 you can install ONLY the API, not including the UI (console). This is a notable installation feature change for WSUS v6.

I would not agree with this.
