    "The INSTALLSHAREDDIR command line value was not specified. This value must be specified when the INSTALLSHAREDWOWDIR value is specified."

    That's the error when attempting to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2.  Did the Google root and discovered this is an installation bug since 2009.

    Options:

    1) Wait for SQL Server Express 2012 when ready to ship? i.e. not a beta release candidate.

    2) Contact Microsoft and hire them to install the software?

    3) Purchase SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard because the "free" version is free but doesn't work?

    Appreciate the help.

    did you install 64-bit version and not 32-bit version? and how did you start the setup?

    in addition I would recommand to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with SP1.

    download it from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=26729

    if you want to install SQL Server Management Studio Express too than you need download either

    SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe or SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe

    is it 32 bit machine ?

    if so can you try to run setup from command line ?

    setup.exe /Action=Install /x86
