Background: Just upgraded SQL 2000 SE x86 to SQL 2005 SE x86 SP3, 9.0.4211. OS Win 2003 EE SP2, Virtual Machine.

As soon as I open SSMS:

Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Client\SqlManager' is denied.

I can click continue and go ahead. When going to regedit, I can't even see 'MIcrosoft SQL Server' in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft.

Now I am trying to create a new maintenance plan using 'Maintenace plan wizard', get:

Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Client\SqlManager' is denied. (mscorlib)

I can choose 'Maintenance Plan' and go ahead. I am admin on the machine & SQL.

    Hello,

Uninstall SQL Server Management Studio using Control Panel and then try installing it again.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi SQLRocker,

Thank you for your update. Based on my research the SQL 2005 SSMS stores its settings at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell

Regarding to your description seems you upgraded SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. According to the error message might be related to SSMS tool issue as Alberto mentioned you can reinstall SSMS tool again.

So you can download SSMS2008 R2, which can used to manager all the version server 2000/2005/2008 of SQL on Management Studio 2008 R2 tool. You can get from: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=22985
For how to uninstall SSMS, you can refer to here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909953
