I downloaded the Hyper-V disk files to install and run Microsoft's evaluation copy of System Center 2008 VMM for testing purposes. I followed the instructions for setting up the host and Hyper-V machines that were included with the download (Deploying VMM 2008 R2 Using a VHD). I then attempted to run the SCVMM server configuration tool as instructed, but upon reaching the SQL server settings, received the following error when clicking next:
Setup has detected a database that is not compatible with the version being installed. (ID: 235)
Delete VirtualManagerDB from SQL instance MICROSOFT$VMM$ and then continue with Setup.

Hello James,
What is your SQL version?
Do you use the SQL from "Deploying VMM 2008 R2 Using a VHD" ? Single VM, SCVMM and SQL in one VM.
In normally SQL 2008 is supported for SCVMM 2008.
FYI.
Sincerely,
Murat Demirkiran

In case someone runs across this with a Google search (as I did), in my case, it was the fact that I was using the R2 install media rather than the R2 SP1 install media.
Checking the DatabaseVersion in the VMM_GlobalSetting table of the VirtualManagerDB will tell you what version you were running in the past. Googling for SCVMM and the version may tell you what installation media you want to use. YMMV.
