Answered Mitsumi USB Floppy Drive read error

I just got a Mitsumi USB floppy drive, and downloaded the driver to my Lenovo laptop X201 running Win7.  It shows up as drive A in "my computer."  However, when I click on it, I get an error box that says, "You need to format the disk in drive A: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?

I am just trying to get access to files off my old floppies, so I don't think I should format (won't that erase the files on the disk?).  Any suggestions?

I just tried unclicking "Hide empty drives" under computer > organize> folder and search options > view.  Still no luck in reading.  One additional fact: I believe these floppies were used on an old Mac rather than an older PC.

If they are Mac floppies you will need a conversion program.

    Try http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/.

I think that got me closer, DominicP, thank you.  For some reason it continues to tell me that I have to format the disk.  Am I right that doing that would erase the current contents?

    later...

I have now gotten some floppies to work--there seems to be more going on here; so thanks, DominicP!

now I'm getting "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

    Any thoughts?

The message about formatting is shown when Windows cannot read the disk. Either the disk is unformatted or is in a format Windows cannot recognise.

Formatting would destroy any information on the disk.

If the floppies are old they may have deteriorated. The I/O error indicates a problem with the floppy condition, or possibly a defective floppy drive.
