I had this problem myself today with build 6000 and found a solution
Start>Control Panel> top left hand corner click classic view> Administrative tools>Services> double click windows update>stop the service> change Automatic (Delayed Start) to Automatic> Start the service> click apply and Reboot. Windows updates should be working now

1 august 2007 15:43Hi,
First post here, but I wanted to say that I tried to do that fix, and when I attempted to run update, it failed. I rechecked the services setting, and it reverted back to (delayed start). Anyone have any other ideas?
This is getting very frustrating as my computer has not updated in about 2 months. I've searched google and every search engine I could find for a solution to this. I tried them all. Nothing worked. I'm hoping there's something in SP1 coming out that will fix this as this is the first Vista issue I've encountered, but it's a big one none the less.
Cheers!!
P.S. I am running 32 bit vista -

anymore on this issue? i get it as well...
I've tried "net stop wuauserv" in cmd then renamed SoftwareDistribution (in dir %win%) to something else (e.g. SoftwareDistribution.old) then "net start wuauserv" in cmd but no luck on resolving with this method. Although I have not tried restarting afterward...
anywho keep this thread alive

7 august 2007 15:07I again tried to change from delayed start, and tried to use WU manually. It just searched for updates for about 20 min, and then it changed itself back to delayed start. This is getting very frustrating.
EDIT: I was just changing the update settings, and it's 11:00 here, so i changed the automatic setting to 11:00. In the tray, the WU symbol appeared, and when i moved the cursor over it, it said it was downloading updates(up to 3% done). When i opened WU, it got the 8000FFFF error. UGHH!!!!! -

If this does not work you can goto http://search.microsoft.com/Results.aspx?qsc0=0&q=service+pack&mkt=en-US&FORM=QBME1&l=1 and
download this service pack 1. This did work for me so before you try registry config You may want to take a look at this.
