Windows 7 Ad hoc network with iphone problem.

I have posted this on a third party forum where i found somebody else with the same problem. I will post it here too as a fix has not yet been found. Any ideas will be great.
Basically when creating an adhoc network in windows 7. And connecting an iphone to it. the wireless displays "waiting for users to connect", and the iphone is unable to pick up ics via windows 7 or any connection between eachother. However the iphone does seem to think its connected to the network via the wireless icon, windows 7 says nothing is connected.
I have tried on vista and it works perfectly.
However my computer running ubuntu can connect via windows 7 ics perfectly fine.
But i still think this must be a windows 7 problem.
I notice than Vista assigns the wireless adapter the address 192.168.0.1 when ics is enabled.
The iphone then picks up the following under vista on DCHP
ip 192.168.0.x
255.255.255.0
router 192.168.0.1
dns 192.168.0.1
However windows 7 does not assign anything to the wireless adapter, and gives the iphone a 169. ip with a 255.255.0.0 subnet instead. and no router or dchp.
I attempted to manually assign the wireless adapter on windows 7 to 192.168.0.1 and also manually assign the correct ips and dns etc in the iphone.
But still the same problem. Strange though how i can use the windows 7 ad hoc network on ubuntu but not the iphone.
Any ideas?

I am having the exact same problem... Iphone gets an IP 169.x.x.x but the computer itself has no IP assigned when connected to the iphone vis adhoc connection.
ipconfig says media disconnected. Wifi status says "waiting for users to connect". I can get it to work with XP and Vista.
Is this a remained bug to be fixed for Windows 7? -

Is it possible for you to email me at huis at microsoft dot com . I can provide you further instructions on enabling the traces as well as the mechanism to upload them to us.
Meanwhlie, we will also try to see if we can reproduce this issue locally. Can you please provide the Wi-Fi adapter model and driver version. In an elevated command window, type "netsh wlan show driver" and send back the output.

I can create an ad hoc connection which my iphone can join (as long as it's not WPA2 AES. However the connection appears to be very unstable. I want to use the network to run VNC software but because of the instability of the connection my VNC connection keeps being disconnected. I never encountered this problem with Vista or XP.Another problem though this may be on the iphone side of things is that my iphone won't connect to an ad hoc connection with WPA2 personal AES security. My Access point is running WPA2 TKIP and my iphone connects no problem. Could this be a problem with the implementation of WPA2 in ad hoc connections? Unfortunately there is no option for TKIP when creating an ad hoc connection in Windows 7 so I may be stuck with WEP for now.Thanks in advance for your help!

3 septembrie 2009 08:05I have the exact same problem with WPA2 so I changed back to WEP. You say you have an unstable connection.... this sounds to me like you, at last, have a connection (which is great).
And no - I have all the same problems as bigfish21

As I state there, there is no doubt that a change in Win7 relative to Vista contributed to this problem, so help from MS with this issue would be much appreciated. My wireless network adapter is the Intel 4965AGN, Microsoft (?) driver version 12.4.1.4 (netw5v64.sys). Hope this helps! -Joe

Thank you for reporting this issue. It would be very helpful to collect the Wi-Fi related tracing informaiton for further investigation. Could you please provide logs for us by doing the following from an elevated/administrator command prompt?Do the following from an administrative command prompt:
- Netsh trace start wlan_dbg report=yes
- netsh ras set tr * en
- Reproduce your problem
- netsh ras set tr * dis
- Netsh trace stop
Please send%LocalAppdata%\temp\nettraces\nettrace.cab
as well as
%windir%\tracing
Once you are done, wait for the final step to complete (could take a few minutes) and then zip the contents in above folders and send the file to us. My email is huis at microsoft.comThanks,

4 septembrie 2009 03:12Just emailed the log files. Of course while trying to reproduce the problems, things chose to go smoothly. I did manage to run into a timeout error on synchronization while logging was on, which I hope will give a clue about potential issues. I wonder if things improved after I switched to the lowly WEP as opposed to WPA, but for now I'll stop testing and wait to see if Meegon's logs show anything conclusive. -JoeEdit: found an older post I made elsewhere:"I cannot set up a WPA2 ad-hoc connection between my iPhone and my X61t. Lowering the security to WEP allows me to connect. However, I used to be able to synchronize files with Documents to Go just fine once connected to the ad-hoc network in Vista, but with Win7, this does not work. Although D2G does notice the iPhone over WiFi, the 'pairing' process times out." Since then the pairing has worked, but time-outs still occur.Conclusion - it looks like the main issue I have with Docs2Go concerns timeouts. A separate issue may exist with setting up a WPA2 connection, but I haven't delved into this any further. Meegon, just in case, can you try the same with WEP instead? Highly insecure, so use it only to test.

Hi there...
I have sent my trace report to Hui Shen but I am a bit confused about the 'try to repreduce the problem'. The problem is pretty easy to get to, but since the problem does not 'happen' on the Windows site I am a bit confused about for what use the debugging/trace report is worth. In other words: how can a trace report tell why the iPhone does not obtain a valid IP address?
If you ask me it should be the trace report from the iPhone that should be useful. Anyway - i recognize that the problem is related to the way Windows 7 pools the IP-address (now that Vista works okay).
The stupid question: who not just look at the way Vista does it and then implement the same method in W7? -

however i recieved a fix off another forum many months ago.
the fix is basically to use an old atheros driver (cant remember which one think it was a vista version). and overwrite the windows 7 driver with that, took alot of messing about to get windows 7 to except the driver i did it so long ago ive forgot but works perfectly. -
4 septembrie 2009 12:08I recall reading that thread (you're famous), but I think most users there shared the same Atheros wireless card. Could still be the same issue though. -JoeEdit: just noted that in that thread a user claims that that the problem did not exist in one of the Win7 betas. Perhaps go over some of the late changes to networking?

i dont know what wireless chipset your using but if your using atheros this should fix your issue.

alternatively if your not using atheros 50007 id take a guess at finding the equivelent xp driver for your chipset and install it in XP compatibility mode.
Ive installed a more recent build of win7 on a broadcom based laptop will give the phone a try on that when i get a chance see if it works "out the box" so to speak. -

just tested windows 7 on a broadcom wireless machine and same problem with win7 drivers.
I am experiencing the same problem and I am using broadcom chipset on both cards. One is a PCI card which is set as ADHOC and the other is a PCMCIA connected to laptop. I have ICS enabled on the wlan card which is set as AD-HOC. But the client WLAN notebook does not get the IP address. And even if I manually type in the address 192.168.137.5 it still wont work. Even if I then ping 192.168.137.1 I receive no reply.
This has got to be a bug in Win7

I am having the same problem and I could not figure out what the solution is. Would you please take a look at it and give me some comments or solution:
Previously, I used Ad hoc connection and ICS to get the internet connection to my iPod through my laptop WiFi. It worked perfectly under Windows XP and Windows Vista. Two months ago, I installed Windows 7 and I also configured my ad hoc connection to surf internet on my iPod. It worked for several weeks. After that it stopped working. I did not do any serious things to my iPod but I did some updates from Microsoft. Do you think that those updates can break the ad hoc connection?
Of course, previously, I also used the WEP encryption. My WLAN card has the Atheros chip, its serial is: Atheros AR5006X. I tried to install the official drivers from Atheros for Windows Vista (they do not say any thing about Windows 7 therefore I suggest that the drivers are the same). It did not work.
Now, after creating the ad hoc connection, my iPod even could not join the network. Nevertheless, my iPod can quickly connect to any access point (in my school) thus I think that it would not be a problem of iPod but the problem of Windows 7.
If you have any idea, advice or comment, please tell me and I will really appreciate it.

I have the same problem. If I try to connect with Nokia 5800 or a notebook to this adhoc network it connects to the network but never gets IP. Even if I manually input IP it still won't ping.
Have been talking to M$ support about this issue for a week and no solution came out except change the network card. Which I did and it did not help..
Strangely on Win XP this works without problem. -

I read all your case and proff some things. Now I have "my solution."
Windows 7 assing 192.168.2.1 ip and 255.255.255.0 at first time that I create the ad-hoc connection.
I write in my iphone configuration 192.168.2.172 , 255.255.255.0 ,192.168.2.1 (router) and DNS in my case 80.58.0.97, 80.58.0.33.
After all this I reinstalled the ultimate drivers to my lan and wifi adapters.

I solve it with WEP encryption. WES didn't work. (on Lenovo T510 with Realtek Wlan card driver)
All on Win7 to connect iPhone for sharing internet connection.
Now it's working fine. -

I have tried both "Connectify" and Windows 7 native ad-hoc connection setup manually.
I was able to succeed to connect iPhone with both connections (in seperate instances) but both have stability problem.
Once it got disconnected it is very difficult to reconnect. Out of the severel tries which included even restarting PC, 2 or 3 times iPhone got connected with DHCP (yes iPhone got IP address 192.169.2.XX from DHCP) with wireless security enabled.
Another problem I find is the hardcored Gateway address 192.168.2.1 for the ad-Hoc and Connectify connections.
I already have a router running in the network with the same address and I don't want to change it's address.How we can change the gateway address on windows 7 native Ad-hoc connection (ie from 192.168.2.1 to something like 192.168.4.1) ?

My problem seems to be solved. I was using a Linksys USB adaptor (WUSB300N) which was seems to be unstable.
Now I used another USB adaptor (Alfa long range Taiwan made) and infact was much cheaper than linksys and now I can almost connect iPhone to Wifi internet with minimal of interruptions.
So the these problems might be related to either the installed drivers for wireless adaptor or either the problems of hardware it self.
Regarding hardcored gateway address 192.168.2.1 which could actually we can change from registry.
I don't remember the exact places to be edited, But search for "192.168.2.1" in values without quotes and replace to other IP range such as 192.168.4.1 or a suitable gateway address that does not conflict with existing gateways in the network. and (may be a restart required, does not mind just restart). After this the network gateway conflict problem was solved ( iPhone got ip address in the new gateway address series)

Windows 7 Adhoc network network for Iphone 4
First of all remove the generic drivers of Windows 7. Download the drivers of the wireless network card from manufacturers site and install. Open Network and sharing center - > Set up a new network - Set up a wireless ad hoc -> Next- Next -> Network name , WEP and password-> Share my internet connection ..Done!

I was having the same issue and found that using WEP instead of WPA2 (the default) worked without a hitch.
Resurrecting this thread from the dead.. I too am having problems getting a device (iPhone) to connect to my Windows 7 ad-hoc WPA2-Personal wireless network. I must lower the security to WEP. - Type: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MySSID key=Mykey keyUsage=persistent (MySSID and Mykey will be of your own choosing); don't close command line window
- Go to Network Connections and ensure you see Wireless Network Connection 2; enable ICS for connection you use for internet, i.e. Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection; to enable ICS, right click on internet connection and select properties; choose sharing tab up above; ensure check by Allow other network users to connect...; choose Wireless Connection 2 in the drop down; click on Settings; click applicable boxes - I checked all of them; click OK twice
- Go back to command line window
- Type: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
- Connect to network with iPad, iPhone, xbox, laptp, etc. using SSID and key you created
- If you want to see that it is indeed WPA2, go to command line prompt and type: netsh wlan show hostednetwork

7 ianuarie 2012 10:17I guess technically I setup a hotspot with the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, not an adhoc connection. This accomplishes what Virtual Router or Connectify does without the software.

I gave up about 3-4 times over the last 6-8 hours trying to figure this s#1t out, anyway... SOLUTION - (at least for me)
1. UPDATE TO LATEST DRIVERS... can't stress how important that is... you can change the IP/adhoc/etc 1000s of times with no change.
2. Straight Adhoc did not work for me no matter what. Got connected etc but no data coming through.
3. BRIDGE!!!
4. You must do a clean bridge, forget about ICS etc. Just shift select LAN/Wifi icons in adapters, right click -> bridge and WAIT!
5. Now do an adhoc follow the instructions somewhere else here, it's pretty easy, must be WEP or OPEN.
6. Trust me, I didn't have any faith in the Bridge+Adhoc solution I thought it had to be one or the other, but now I have net on my iOS device.
7. Just for the record I have an Intel Wifi Link 5100 (POS) and dowloaded the latest 64bit driver here:

It also works for these cards:

If you are on windows 7:: please "CREATE RESTORE POINT", google it or type it into the start menu on win7.

This is so freaking frustrating... No matter how I do it (with ICS or bridging the networks) there is no way I can get my iPhone to obtain an IP address from the ad-hoc WiFi connection on my laptop. Once I create the ad-hoc network and try to join it from my iPhone, first it only works with Open or WEP (what is this, 2005?), and second, the new ad-hoc network on my laptop keeps saying "Waiting for users" and not fully accepting the iPhone's connection. The iPhone thinks it's connected but obviously never gets an IP address assigned, so it doesn't work. I have updated to the latest versions of drivers for my wireless card (Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300) and OS (Win 7 SP1 32bit) to no avail.
The only thing that has worked for me is @JarheadBuckeye's solution of creating a hosted network as a wireless access point, and it even connects with WPA2-Personal, so that's an extra benefit. I did have a lot of problems even doing this until I updated my driver, but not it seems to be working... The problem is that this seems to be rather manual requiring you to start the hosted network manually every time you reboot (or every time you want to use it). The added bonus is that this would even work to share your WiFi internet connection over the same WiFi interface as it uses the virtual WiFi miniport adapter to create a virtual wireless interface so you essentially have two network interfaces...

I just tried connectify and this works like a charm!!!
Connectify works fine (sometimes) with my iPhone, but as soon as my Blackberry connects to the wireless access point, it BSODs right away. I've Googled it and apparently many other users are having the same issue with Connectify and some (newer) Blackberry devices... I had to end up uninstalling Connectify. @JarheadBuckeye's solution works fine with my iPhone and my Blackberry. No more BSODs... -

Win 7 iPhone IOS 5x with WPA2 does not work in most cases - problems at both ends; there is a huge amount of traffic on this on the net; WEP works but WPA2 does not.
Some smart kid kind find hacks to work in some instances but a reasonable solutions has to wait until MS & Apple fix the problem until the next update messes it all up again.
There is a general problem with two entities introducing proprietary or non-standard inelegant solutions to straightforward implementations.

absolutely as it only accepts binary numbers as a password. which means you can only create password with the number 0 and 1 combinations only. ex. 100010001000 or 101010101010
