If you plan to setup only a domain controller (virtual machine)on your laptop personal computer then 4GB RAM will suffice and around not more than 20 to 40 GB HDD space is more than enough. If you add more machine you will need to upgrade your hardware as required also you will need a visualization software like MS Virtual PC or VMware workstation.
If you need official MS system requirements for Windows 2008 R2 visit this link-

There won't be much differece between physical and virtual system for ADDS. If you opt to install AD DS on VM, you need more RAM then processor becasue there will be more IO requirements and it can also differ. Regarding Memory, Disk and CPU utilization, please check Determine Domain Controller Configuration section in Page 41 to the below IPD guide.

Hello,
for Planning and design use the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc268216.aspx With that in mind you can plan the requirements for AD and that way have the limits for the VMs you should configure.
A dual core CPU and at least 4GB RAM are a minimum to use.

I would recommed to have atleast 4GB of RAM with 100GB of HDD is enough. You should also consider the other parameters like CPU,network, etc. It is also not recommend to install addditional role on DC like exchange, filesever,WSUS,etc(should be on member server) else the requiremnt will vary.
