Shrink a volume with RAID?
-
28 martie 2012 18:56I am using Server 2008 Standard (not R2) and have an issue with Server backup. I read somewhere that a fix to my issue may be resolved by shrinking the volume of the drive I am trying to back up. My question is can I use the "Shrink" command in Disk Management to shrink a RAID array? (mirror --2 drives) Thanks!

Is the RAID configuration hard drive RAID or Windows software RAID?

28 martie 2012 21:01The RAID config is hardware based using an Intel VSA5000 motherboard's on board controller.

Hi,
When you extend or shrink a volume, only a simple volume or a spanned volume can be modified: You cannot extend or shrink striped, mirrored, or RAID-5 volumes without deleting the volume and recreating it. For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article:
Partitions and Volumes
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163559.aspxI don’t have an Intel RAID chipset, so I cannot test it for you. I would like to suggest you try to shrink the volume directly to check if it works.

You can then shrink the drive as long as you don't have a Software RAID within Windows you should be good- Marcat ca răspuns de Arthur_LiMicrosoft Contingent Staff, Moderator 2 aprilie 2012 02:45
