Hyper-V 2008 R2 hardware network configuration
-
17 aprilie 2012 16:38I installed it on a non-server spec machine for testing. First I wanted to set the local NIC with a static IP but ipconfig gives me "media disconnected". I installed another NIC and core_config for better view which BTW also shows me that my network card is disconnected even though the lights are on both on the card and on the switch I'm connecting it to. Second NIC (different brand) shows exactly the same behaviour. For both NICs I installed Windows7 64bit drivers which should be fine for 2008. Any ideas?

Hello Yaro,
I presume if you stick another device (laptop or something) on the same cable you get an address as you would expect?
Do you get the same if you view it via NetSh?
Netsh > Interface > Show Interface
I'm guessing seen as you have run Core Config you are using a Windows Server Core install so not exactly easy to chek the drivers are installed OK but you could use another mahine and 'Connect to another machine'. You will need to enable remote management on your server firewall:
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“remote administration” new enable=yes
You will all so need to change the local GPO to enable PnP:
From another machine open the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in then go to:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Device Installation and enable PnP give the server a quick restart and you should be able to remotely view (although you won't be able to change anything) the drivers etc are installed OK.
If all that looks OK maybe worth changing the network cables etc. Are you going into a patch pannel or directly into a switch etc?

18 aprilie 2012 08:32Hi there. Netsh gives me the same IP. It's not running DHCP so I have to configure the other machine manually and no, they cannot ping each other. Firewall disabled on the Hyper-V. Obviously without being able to connect I can't do anything else you recommend :) Wish there was a way of getting the the device manager on that server to confirm the driver works as although I tested 2 different card there is a chance the driver I installed doesn't work as expected.

18 aprilie 2012 09:50Just as an update I installed an Intel NIC and I could see it straight away in CoreConfig without the need of installing any drivers this time. However it still says media disconnected. How annoying...

Hello Yaro,
Some network adapters just does not work with Hyper-V server. You can ask to the manufacturer of the card if it supports Hyper-V Server. By the way, you can use Hyper-V as a role on Windows Server 2008R2, if you do not have a license you can get the trial version from Microsoft download page.
You can check a similiar problem on the next link :

18 aprilie 2012 13:51Thanks Erkan. The whole point was to create a stable environment for an SBS 2003 and Windows XP VMs to serve our SBS migrations as we found it doesn't work very well under Virtual PC not only not supporting multiple cores but also causing problems with data transfer rates. We could use Windows Server 2008 but here comes the license issue and problems when the trial expires. Of cause you could play with backing everything up and restoring which is why I thought Hyper-V Server R2 would be best for our purpose.
