Trying to install Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection on laptop running XP SP3 and keep getting "An error has prevented the Forefront Endpoint Protection setup wizard from completing successfully. Please restart your computer and try again. Error code: 0x8007007E"

I have removed old antivirus software, confirmed windows installer is version 4.5, started windows installer service, run ccleaner, tried running from cd and copying to desktop, run regsvr32 msxml3.dll, run SFC /scannow, run MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and tried installing when Windows is in Selective Startup mode all with no luck. Please help I'm out of things to try!

    Hi,

Have you seen this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff823833 ? Also what's your old antivirus?

Thanks for the reply, I had mcafee antivirus before. I've done a few other computers on our network that I uninstalled mcafee and then pushed forefront down from a server and all worked fine but this one computer is not on network so have to do it manually. I did see that link before and tried everything on it even though I have SP3 instead of SP2 and no luck.

    Hi,

Could you confirm that all McAfee traces are removed? You use a removal tool or a manual procedure from McAfee web site. Then, the computer has been rebooted before pushing FEP?

Yes all traces of McAfee are off, I removed them manually the same way I did for several other computers. I did noticed however when testing on another laptop off the network that Forefront will automatically detect and remove MacAfee for you so that shouldn't even be an issue.

After more research I came across some mentions of DLL issues causing the error but I don't know too much about how they work. I cleaned them up with CCleaner but that made no difference still.

Does anyone else have any ideas they can offer? I'm at a lose!

Saw this same error will come up when you can't install windows updates but no where have I seen a solution. I've also run Malwarebytes, spybot, sophos and spydll remover incase theres some hidden virus preventing it somehow. Please help!

    Hi Me129,

Please run the MscSupportTool from the link below on the system that is having the failure.  It will create a cab file which you can email to me at kemckinn@microsoft.com for review.

    Download the MscSupportTool

    Thanks, Kevin

Having the same issue. Anyone have an update on this? Trying to install it on Server2003.

Because it is a different operating system, please start another thread so we can escalate it if necessary.  You can monitor this thread for a solution, but there is no guarantee that it will be applicable to a 2003 system.

    Thanks, Kevin

    Hi Me129,

Are you still having the error when installing FEP?  Please let me know if you have resolved the issue, or run the MSC Support tool from my other post and email it to me.

    Thanks, Kevin
