My company is using the Microsoft share point cloud solution. I've been asked to start developing some new sites in share point so I am trying to install Share Point Designer. I have downloaded the install file from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=d88a1505-849b-4587-b854-a7054ee28d66 which was a link from http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/product/related-technologies/pages/sharepoint-designer.aspx so I'm pretty sure that I am downloading the correct version. I run Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 installed.
When I try to run the downloaded executable to install Share Point Designer a pop up box appears and says "The installation of this package failed." The title of the pop up is "Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007"
I ran the executable with the log option and I found: (please note that I tried with version 2010 and 2007, both have been supplied below)
- 2010

I've tried downloading the installer 3 times with diffrent browsers (unless it's my companies cache that has a corrupt version?) I couldn't find a md5 sum of what the installer should be so I couldn't check.
Does any one know what could be causing the installer to fail?

Ryan, SharePoint Online 2010 hasn't released yet. What cloud solution are you referring to? Are you talking about the current SharePoint Online for 2007?
When you say "developing sites," what do you mean in relation to SharePoint Designer? You cannot use SPD 2007 with SharePoint 2010, and you can't use SPD2010 with SharePoint 2007, so I don't think it's worth trying to install both. Only install the version that matches the version of SharePoint you're using.
Must you use XP? That is quite old. Are you unable to run Win 7 or at least Vista? Have you tested the install on another box just to be sure it's not your machine or your OS?
What version of Office is currently installed on your XP box?

Hi Clayton,
Yes I meant SharePoint Online 2007. I tried the SharePoint Developer 2010 more to see if I would get a different error message or not.
I can request to get a Windows 7 upgrade, however I was hoping to not have to backup and reinstall everything if at all possible and would rather installing some additional OS patches. Although if I have to then I have to :).
The install files did work on my colleagues Windows 7 install so the install files are fine.
I currently have Office 2007 installed on this PC. I also use the Office Communicator Online service.

Ok, so then you need to be in the 2007 forums. I asked those questions, because you posted in the SharePoint Designer 2010 forum. 2007 and 2010 are not interchangeable in terms of SharePoint Designer.
The SPD2010 download page says it supports XP SP3, and you say your OS is on that build, but I think the fact that the same install package works on Win7 but not on your machine is a telling sign. I wasn't so much suggesting Win7 to make SPD work, but that it's a wayyyyyyyyy old OS now, and I wouldn't let the prospect of backups and installs hold you back in the stone ages. I know it's a pain, but I have installed Win7 multiple times on my personal desktop and none of them were "upgrades," because I went to 64-bit from 32-bit the first time, and then went from Beta Ultimate to RTM Enterprise the 2nd time. The 3rd time was when my move from Office 2010 RC to RTM messed up, and I had to re-install. It's definitely not worth being on XP.
With Office 2007, you're fine for installing SPD2007. Definitely do not try to install any Office 2010 products on your machine with Office 2007.

Thanks Clayton,
I've put a request in and I should be running with Windows 7 tomorrow.
Sorry about posting on the wrong forum... I found this one when searching for some problems, I should have double checked first.
I've got Windows 7 on my desktop at home too so I might install and try it out tonight.
Thanks again for all your help.

So, stupid question - Do you need Office 2010 to use SPD2010? My install failed with a very cryptic message similar to above. I do not have Office 2010 installed. It is Office 20007.
Thanks, Mike
